The Master s Programme in music drama offers the opportunity of immersing yourself more deeply in the knowledge and skills required of a practising opera singer/musicals artist. The programme offers individual coaching in vocal as well as dramatic and physical scenic performance with the aim of developing your own quality and originality as an artist. The focus will also be on improving your musical interpretation with the help of experienced coaches and conductors. Tuition will be adapted to your individual needs in order to refine your unique qualities as an artist.
Seminars at advanced level and in-depth plunges into the literature of music drama are intended to increase the student s knowledge bank. In the seminars, the opportunity will also be provided of reflecting about and evaluating one s own artistry in relation to the contemporary cultural environment. The student will be given tools for developing her/his independence as an artist by means of a critical and creative approach relating to her/his craftsmanship and professional role.
As an applicant to the Master s Programme, you will have formulated your ideas in a project plan concerning a field of interest that you wish to investigate and develop further as your degree project. All other theoretical and practical tuition should be utilised in your independent degree project.
The programme is intended to lead to a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Music Drama. It is preparatory with regard to research and the language of tuition is English.
Educational Environment
The Academy of Music and Drama offers an environment that is unique in Scandinavia within the framework of universities where musicians, composers, opera singers, musicals performers and actors are educated side by side at the Bachelor s and the Master s levels. Artistic post-graduate education is also available here. An eminent teaching staff consisting of professors with academic and artistic merits, as well as senior lecturers and lecturers is the guarantee for the high artistic and pedagogical quality of the programme. The programme in music drama cooperates with the Gothenburg Opera and other Swedish opera and musical stages. We are also members of an international network of university education in opera and musicals.
The learning environment at the Academy of Music and Drama is unique for higher education in Scandinavia in offering first and second-cycle programmes for musicians, composers, opera singers, musical artistes and actors alongside each other. It also has research programmes in the fine, applied and performing arts. A staff of distinguished teachers that includes professors with research or artistic qualifications as well as senior lecturers and lecturers can guarantee the high artistic and educational standards of the programme.
Programmes in musical drama performance enjoy excellent and close cooperation with the Göteborg Opera as well as other operas and musical theatres in Sweden. These offer placements for example. The academy is also a member of an international network of higher education programmes in opera and musicals.
Teaching staff
About 30 teachers are connected to the field of musical theatre, about half of them part-time lecturers. There are four professors (two with artistic and two with research qualifications). About ten senior lecturers (of whom one has a Ph D) are also members of the musical drama performance faculty.
Premises
The programmes that involve drama jointly share two theatres, one of them a musical theatre, five drama studios, two dance and movement studios, as well as a number of vocal and drama rehearsal rooms.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testCandidates must have a bachelor´s degree in the fine, applied or performing arts, a corresponding degree of at least 180 credits in the performing arts or the equivalent.
Selection: Selection is based on a written project plan and an interview. The admission procedure may also comprise an entry test in which performance and musical skills will be assessed. Decisions on admission will be made by the Principal of the Academy on the basis of proposals from the admissions jury.
