Location of Tallinn University

The interdisciplinary programme at the Estonian Institute of Humanities, Tallinn University integrates Comparative Literature and Cultural Semiotics. It combines theoretical courses (e.g. Genre Studies, Semiotics of Literary Space, Postcolonial Theory) with courses in particular literatures and cultures. It includes a large proportion of elective courses, together with supervisory guidance, in order to enable the students to follow their individual intellectual pursuits and research interests. Besides more usual options the students can study the cultures specifically connected to Estonia: Estonian, Russian, Baltic German. Another noteworthy strength of the programme is Asian and Middle Eastern Studies offered by the specialist department at the Estonian Institute of Humanities.

The Estonian Institute of Humanities runs the programme in cooperation with colleagues from the Institute of Estonian Language and Literature, the Institute of Germanic and Romance Languages and Cultures, and the Institute of Slavonic Languages and Cultures to offer a wide range of choice. The students are encouraged to spend one semester of their M.A. studies as exchange students abroad.

The graduates will be prepared to continue their studies on PhD level or to work in areas that ask for strong skills in writing and critical reading; knowledge of languages, different cultures, and mechanisms of cultural interaction - e.g. media, education, cultural diplomacy, governance, publishing.
