As the European Union has developed into new policy areas, EU law has grown in significance. The LLM in European Law offers a detailed knowledge of EU law in a range of fields. These include constitutional law, the law relating to the single market, competition law, environmental law, employment law, the law on migration, and human rights law.
The approach taken to EU law on this programme is not merely a technical one. The LLM also aims to highlight the choices faced by the legal policy in these fields, including the reasons for legal integration and the difficulties which it presents.
As a result of its focus on EU legal policy, the LLM programme makes extensive provision for the study of European comparative law in the context of the European Union. This is done through specialist modules on comparative law and by including comparative perspectives within modules on EU law.
This programme is especially suitable for students wishing to become lawyers, academics or public officials in fields concerned with European law.
Contents
The Master's degrees offered within the Law School are taught by seminar and dissertation.
You take three modules in each of the first two terms. These are normally assessed by a single essay of 4-5,000 words for each module, but some modules make special arrangements for assessment, for example, by requiring two essays of 2-2,500 words, or by awarding up to 20% of the marks according to the quality of student participation.
In the third term and during the summer period, you write a 15-20,000 word dissertation, under the supervision of a member of academic staff. This should be on a specific topic within the field of the degree.
For all of the Law taught Master's degrees, there is the alternative of studying for a postgraduate diploma. Students registered for the diploma take the same modules as a Master's student, but do not write a dissertation.
Course content
* At least three European law modules, currently including: European Comparative Law; EU Constitutional and Institutional Law; EU and International Competition Law: Legal Foundations; EU Environmental Law and Policy; EU Migration Law; European Contract Law; Foundations of EU Economic Law; European Human Rights Law; EU External Relations Law.
* Up to three modules from any others offered by the Kent Law School or other Schools at Kent, including: International Protection of Human Rights; Decision-making in the European Union; European Public Policy.
* Dissertation of 15-20,000 words
Assessment
Assessment is by a 4-5,000-word essay for each module, and the dissertation for the award of the Master's.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

A first or good second class honours degree in law or a related subject. For students whose first language is not English, the formal policy is to require usually a minimum of equivalent to IELTS 7.0, but the Programme Convenor will also consider applicants whose English language ability is IELTS 6.5.
