You will learn to understand technological innovation and how you can improve innovation and direct it. You will develop awareness of the wider international, socio-economic and regulatory contexts.
Innovation (processes) and technological change take place in an international context more and more. The program therefore has a strong international focus. Succesful innovations are dependent on technological development. However, the question whether an innovation ultimately becomes a success also depends on a range of social factors. The program takes this into account by combining knowledge of technology with that of social science disciplines. The multidisciplinary nature of the program is reflected in the social sciences courses related to innovation and technology. Your program will be completed with an international internship and a Masters project. This program integrates both social and technical knowledge and insight in relation to technology and innovation. In brief, this Masters program focuses on the question of which technical, economic, social, legal, psychological and ethical aspects need to be taken into account to allow the formulation of effective policy through which technological development and innovation can be initiated in the desired direction.
The MSc program combines inputs from three social science disciplines, namely the economics of innovation and technology, the sociology of innovation and technology and legal aspects of innovation and technology, with inputs from engineering sciences.
The two year program consists of compulsory courses, optional courses, an international trimester and the MSc project.
The compulsory courses consist of social sicence courses on innovation, engineering courses, and a multidisciplinary project. The optional courses offer specialisations: Technology and Development Studies for students interested in pursuing a career in the context of development and developing countries; intellectual property rights, with a focus on legal aspects of innovation and energy and sustainable development.
During the international trimester students study innovation related subjects at other universities. The MSc program has intensive contacts with prominent universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Italy, Singapore and South Africa. The international trimester serves to deepen the knowledge acquired in the regular courses and as a preparation for the work on the MSc thesis.
Most of the second year of the Master's program is largely taken up by your final MSc project. This will be the culmination of the education program leading to a Master of Science Degree in Innovation Sciences (MSc) and/or the degree of Ingenieur (ir.)
