The requirement to provide adequate and appropriate security protection for air travellers, cargo, aircraft and company employees extends far beyond the requirement to simply screen passengers and their baggage. The breadth of operations and administrative support required to enable the successful management of air transportation against the background of severe risks makes the sector unique and the focus of much interest in developing secure systems and processes.
This course aims to provide students with an academically rigorous and work-related programme which will allow them to plan, devise and manage security issues within the industry. Drawing on best practice and regulatory guidance from aviation business leaders, the programme will challenge and stimulate innovative thought and new approaches to aviation security management.
The programme will be based upon best and current practice in Aviation Security and will aim to identify and target emerging trends in both risk and prevention in order to equip students with truly relevant and appropriate knowledge and education.
The University is developing the programme in accordance with guidance and regulation from governing organizations and the programme design will be in consultation with industry and sector leaders. This consultation and development programme will not only include aviation and security sectors but also those organizational areas which may be impacted, or impact upon aviation operations. This allows the student to conduct research far beyond the initial points of effect and to discover the wide range of influencers and business imperatives which colour the approaches to this complicated subject.
With such a detailed, in-depth and consultative process of course development linked to current information and analysis concerning adversary activities, the MSc will place its graduates at the cutting edge of knowledge in protecting aviation and linked assets.
This work-based learning programme will be conducted over an 18 month period and will encompass a blend of face to face workshops, case studies, virtual learning and submitted written assessed tasks. The final module will require students to propose a research project and to produce a 20,000-word dissertation.
