The Master’s Programme in Concealed Knowledge will deepen your knowledge of the history of the development of ‘alternative’ religious traditions. You are aware of their impact on Western cultural history and your deep understanding allows you to pronounce upon current developments in this field. You have learnt how to conduct independent research and to report upon this in an academically responsible fashion.

You can make use of the knowledge and skills that you acquire on the programme in different sectors.

Consulting & Policy. You are specialized in the history and current manifestations of relatively unknown religious traditions. This makes you one of the few experts in this field. Your profile will suit a number of different positions ranging from cultural management to legal advice.

Media & Journalism. Throughout the West, mystical traditions are being rediscovered not just as the subject of study but also as a source through which people can find meaning in life. Publishers and broadcasting companies are responding to this new interest. With your academic background you can make an expert contribution to articles, books and television programmes in this area.

Education. Once you have completed this Master’s programme, you will have sufficient knowledge of the subject to teach Religious Studies and Philosophy or Social Studies in secondary education. Alternatively, you could opt for a position in higher vocational education. As you also need didactic skills as a teacher, it is advisable to do a Master’s in Education after you have completed your regular Master’s programme.

Academia. If, during your studies, you come to the conclusion that you would like to stay in academia, you can choose to apply for a place on the Research Master after your regular Master’s programme. If you are admitted, you can complete this two-year programme in one year. The Research Master is a good stepping stone towards a PhD position or a research post at a national or international knowledge institute

Contents

The MA programme in Concealed Knowledge consists of three thematic course units (30 ECTS) and a thesis (20 ECTS). 10 ECTS are reserved for a practical placement, a tutorial or an additional course unit.

The programme is international in scope and is organized in close collaboration with the Graduate Programme ‘Gnosticism, Esotericism, Mysticism’ at Rice University (Houston, USA) and includes a student and faculty exchange programme, as well as the waiving of tuition fees.

Course Units

* Knowledge, Secrecy, and Revelation in Antiquity

* Medieval Mysticism, Kabbalah, and Contemporary Culture

* Modern Esotericism between East and West

Internship, Academic Tutorial, or Additional Course Unit

The MA programme has a practical component to prepare you for the job market. You can choose one of three forms of individualized training (10 ECTS).

* A practical internship in an organization, company or institute. An internship will give you the opportunity to put your learning and skills into practice in a real societal context, such as in cultural, societal and political organizations, the publishing industry or the media.

* Professional training within the context of Faculty research (tutorial). In the tutorial, you will be able to collaborate more closely on the research project of one or more of the department’s professors. You will be involved in activities such as journal and book editing, ongoing empirical or historical research, and the preparation of and participation in academic conferences.

* An additional course unit. You can customize this part of your MA programme, so you can also use the tutorial to enrol in another course unit, for example, from one of the other MA programmes of the Faculty, or to receive in one-on-one teaching from experts at Groningen or another university. Note: an additional course unit is only possible if your timetable allows for this.

Thesis

On this Master’s programme you will write a thesis worth 20 ECTS. This includes a thesis seminar (5 ECTS).

The seminar guides you in drafting a good research question and outline, in the technical aspects of conducting research, in writing texts and in presenting your work to the outside world when you enter the job market. You can choose from several method workshops to help you develop your thesis research.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
