The historical perspective taken in this programme will enable you to gain an understanding of contemporary issues such as acculturation; the use of Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions and their sacred texts in politics and society; and religious violence. The current debate often refers to perceived historical realities. An understanding of the historical context is essential when assessing such debate and thus contributes to a better understanding of sustainable society.
Trained academics in this field are almost non-existent, and there is a great need to address the issues above through teaching.
Consulting & Policy. You are able to provide well-founded advice on interreligious issues and multicultural society. You can use this expertise in an advisory position at cultural organizations, in companies or in the public sector. Your knowledge makes you suited to policymaking positions in this field.
Media & Journalism. The current debate often refers to perceived historical realities. Your expertise in the formative periods of Judaism, Christianity and Islam enables you to ask critical questions concerning modern-day claims about these religious traditions. You can use your knowledge and skills as an editor at a publishing company, broadcasting company, newspaper or news and current affairs magazine. You could also work as a freelancer.
Education. Once you have completed this Master’s programme you will have enough knowledge of the subject to become a secondary school teacher in the subject of Religious Studies and Philosophy or Social Studies. You could also opt for a position in higher vocational education, for example teaching Theology at a university of applied sciences. As you also need didactic skills as a teacher, it is advisable to do a Master’s in Education after you have completed your regular Master’s programme.
Academia. If, during your studies, you come to the conclusion that you would like to stay in academia, you can choose to apply for a place on the Research Master after your regular Master’s programme. I f you are admitted, you can complete this two-year programme in one year. The Research Master is a good stepping stone towards a PhD position or a research post at a national or international knowledge institute.
Origins of Abrahamic Religions MA programme consists of three thematic course units (30 ECTS) and a thesis (20 ECTS). 10 ECTS are reserved for a practical placement, a tutorial or an additional course unit.

* Revealed Knowledge: Sacred Texts in Judaism, Christianity and Islam
* Jews, Christians and Muslims in the Ancient Mediterranean
* Texts of Terror: Violence, Power and Politics
Internship, Academic Tutorial, or Additional Course Unit
The MA programme has a practical component to prepare you for the job market. You can choose one of three forms of individualized training (10 ECTS).
* A practical internship in an organization, company or institute. An internship will give you the opportunity to put your learning and skills into practice in a real societal context, such as the media, museums, publishers, the government or policy institutes.
* Professional training within the context of Faculty research (tutorial). In the tutorial, you will be able to collaborate more closely on the research projects of one or more of the department’s professors. You will be able to deepen your understanding of one of the three monotheistic traditions or study two or all three from a comparative perspective. It is also possible to use the tutorial for further language training.
* An additional course unit. You can customize this part of your MA programme, so you can also use the tutorial to enrol in another course unit, for example one of the other MA programmes of the Faculty, or to receive one-on-one teaching from experts at Groningen or another university. Note: an additional course unit is only possible if your timetable allows for this.
Thesis
On this Masters's programme you will write a thesis worth 20 ECTS. This includes a thesis training course (5 ECTS).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

* The Master's programme is open to students who have successfully completed a Bachelor’s (not HBO) degree in Theology or Religious Studies and to students who completed a Bachelor's degree in a related field of studies in the Arts, Philosophy or Social Sciences.
Students with a foreign degree need to send a letter of motivation to the admissions committee explaining their choice for this study programme (max. 1 page). They also need to submit an overview of their bachelor programme and a Curriculum Vitae in OAS
