THE PROGRAMME WILL NOT START AUTUMN 2012.

Achievements in biotechnology research and development already affect our lives. In the near future they will be one of the most important factors improving them. Development of new biotechnological tools has led to rapid progress in molecular biology. Many genomes of organisms, from microorganisms to man, have been sequenced, and advanced computer programmes are used to study their evolution, discover new genes and trace genetic diseases.

Nowadays, basic research and applied biotechnology require knowledge and experience combining bioinformatics with advanced experimental methodology such as genetic engineering. Training in molecular and biochemical techniques is useful for a number of applications, including the identification of genes, analysis of gene function and regulation, development of new biotechnological products and even genetic modification of entire organisms.

Future Prospects

Entry qulifications are a Bachelor's degree in biotechnology or the equivalent and a desire to improve and extend your knowledge in biotechnology. A Master´s degree in biotechnology will enable you to work in many fields. Your training can be used both in academic and industrial environments.

You will be well equipped for basic research as well as applied areas such as the development of new drugs and biotechnological methods and products. After your exam you may work at a pharmaceutical company, forensic science laboratory or deal with biotechnological issues at a governmental institute. You will also be qualified to start a PhD project.

Contents

As a Master student in biotechnology you will learn advanced molecular biology and computational methods important for biotechnological applications. The techniques will be used to analyse and modify the genomes of various organisms and to purify and functionally characterise their proteins.

Large industrial scale growth of microorganisms and associated economic and legal implications are other areas covered. Taken together, the knowledge gained will be applicable to research and development in academic world as well as in biotechnology companies. In addition, you will gain insights into developing commercial ideas - from a biotechnological innovation to a final product. This includes understanding the interplay between research and business development, esssential when commercialisating biotechnological products.
