The programme is aimed at persons who want to develop their skills for work with planning, organisation and evaluation of health and medical care and in environmental or occupational health. Typical jobs will be found in national, regional or local authority administration or within social insurance. The international character of the programme, with a high percentage of students from developing countries, also makes it useful for those who wish to seek a career in international development organisations.
Our Master of Public Health (MPH) programme provides the scientific basis for professional work in the field of Public Health, whilst also serving as a channel into and an introduction to public health research. All teaching is grounded in research performed within the department and is method-oriented. In group or PC-lab work, adapted datasets from actual research - cleaned of all identification - are routinely used.
Since the MPH was originally set up in 1991, all of our courses have had internationally focused content, contrasting public health in Western Europe and North America with those of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The Swedish educational system, which does not charge tuition fees, attracts foreign students who, in turn, contribute to our international public health perspective. All courses are delivered in English to reflect our international body of students.
The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a two-year programme comprising 120 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). Of four semesters (two per year), three are dedicated to course work (90 ECTS) and one to thesis research (30 ECTS).
Course work (90 ECTS):
Students follow one of three profiles: Epidemiology, Health Economics and Social Theory for Public Health. All three profiles share a common core of courses (45 ECTS), which, in most cases, should be finished within the first year. Besides the common core, each profile includes compulsory profile courses (30 ECTS). All students must also take elective courses (15 ECTS), either from other MPH profiles or from other departments or universities. The decision to include an elective course must be approved by the UISPH.
Profiles and profile courses are presented during the MPH programme's introductory week, during which students will be offered support to select their profile. We encourage new students to familiarise themselves with the different profile and course descriptions before the introductory week, and come with an idea of which profile they wish to follow. Details about the timings of each course are also discussed during this first week.
Profiles and elective courses may be subject to change in the case of few students.
Thesis (30 CTS):
Students are encouraged to identify and plan their thesis topic in advance. In some cases, this may be done in collaboration with employers or organisations that the student is affiliated with. Students that come from other countries than Sweden, and choose to do empirical theses, may consider doing their data collection in their home country. The School must approve all decisions concerning thesis research and topic.
Full- and part-time study
The Umeå International School of Public Health applies a model of teaching which enables full and part time study.
Each course involves approximately one week per month of full time classroom teaching, when attendance is compulsory. Intervals between teaching weeks are intended for the completion of individual and group assignments and for self study, with no attendance requirements. For students living in Sweden or able to travel to Umeå solely for teaching weeks, this also provides the possibility of combining professional work with part time MPH studies.
If you plan to take the programme, or part of it at, reduced speed with part time studies, it is essential that you apply to the individual courses in time. Please contact the department for more help and information. Since MPH courses are also offered as single courses there may be competition for places.
Part time students, like those studying full time must attend all compulsory course work.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
