THE PROGRAMME WILL NOT START AUTUMN 2012.

There are currently many thousands of land areas in the world that are polluted with metals and organic toxins. How serious are the environmental risks and other risk factors? There are numerous cases where the magnitude of environmental risks must be assessed. This programme provides knowledge and training in the methods used in these assessments.

As awareness of the spread of metals and toxins in nature grows, public authorities and companies are subject to increasingly vigorous demands for action. Risk assessments are becoming more and more popular as a tool used by experts in environmental protection work to evaulate various types of risk. These may involve the risk of toxic compounds leaching from contaminated industrial land or of nutrients and pesticide residues leaching from farmland into neighbouring lakes and seas.

Mankind is also facing the challenge of creating a more recycling-based society, without adverse impacts on the environment or human health. Risk assessments are becoming very much important troughout the world.

Future Prospects

The programme has a unique profile, which in combination with a growing demand for experts and personnel able to assess risks, means that the employment prosepects are good. Potential employers include environmental consulting companies, local and regular authorities, chemicals agencies and environmental protection agencies. The programme also provides the opportunity for further postgraduate studies in this field.

Contents

This programme is aimed at students with a Bachelors degree in natural science, specialising in biology, chemistry, geoscience/soil science or environmental science, and who are seeking a career in environmental risk assessment.
