Forestry is a dynamic and important economic sector. This programme will give you a broad knowledge base and understanding of environmental issues as they concern forest production. SLU conducts teaching and research of relevance to optimising forest production and meeting environmental objectives in close association with the forest sector.
Alternative energy sources, climate-change and globalisation are growing properties. Expertise and know-how are important, both from a European forestry perspective and in foreign aid projects designed to combine economically sound forestry with reduced environmental impact.
The programme is open to students with an undergraduate degree in biology, natural resource-related subjects or forestry or equivalent subjects from SLU or anorther university. The course is particularly suitable for applicants seeking a career in forestry or the bioenergy sector and for those interested in analysis, problem solving and decision making as they relate to forestry and environmental protection.
SLU has a unique national responsibility for research into sustainable use of biological natural resources, and its close contact with the forestry sector should generate a wide range of career opportunities at private companies, public authorities or governmental agencies in Sweden or abroad. Participation in teaching by active research teams creates excellent opportunities for those wishing to enter PhD research training.
The programme provides a general understanding of the necessary conditions for sustainable forestry with minimised impact on biodiversity from a Swedish and an international perspective. Students can broaden their skills or specialise in optional courses. Teaching is based on up-to-date research.
Core courses during the first year will focus on how forests can be managed to optimise production and achiee environmental goals. The emphasis will be on the way forests resources are used in Europe and the rest of the world, and the role played by international forest conventions.
The second year offers a selection of optional courses in ecology, nature conservation, forest healph and other applied subjects. An individual project is also carried out. If you have sufficient knowledge of forestry-related subjects, you may already be eligible to choose courses in your first year.
