Why is it so difficult to collectively organise sustainable fishing in lake Chilwa in Malawi? How do people cope during an extreme flood in Vietnam? What are the basic ideas of development policies of the European Union and the World Bank?
There is a growing recognition that the challenges in the development and management of rural areas globally are due to a multitude of social, economic, political and ecological factors. Understanding and dealing with this complex and multi-layered reality therefore requires interdisciplinary analyses and innovative solutions. This programme offers students knowledge and skills from different disciplines - with a key theoretical base in the social sciences - to create appropriate ways of managing rural problems in context.
Future Prospects
A Master´s degree in Rural Development and Natural Resource Management offers job proscects in fields such as development projects or organisations working in the development arena, the academic world, research, the private sector, consultancy firms, policy design and facilitation, governmental or non-governmental organisations and local, national or international institutions.
Contents
The programme is organised into themes that include introductory and advanced courses, offering students a broad understanding of rural development and natural resource management as well as more specialised knowledge of the different dimensions involved.
Students are taught how to training in facilitate and manage development projects and to acquire knowledge and skills in conducting research. The courses will provide theoretical knowledge applied in case study scenarios, requiring active student involvement.
Some examples of topics in the courses cover the consquences of long-term aid in poor and weak welfare states, rural change and the role of non-farm and off-farm activities and farming practices, technologies and solutions for sustainable farming, fishing and forestry.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Equivalent to Bachelor´s degree of 180 HEC including 90 HEC in one of the following subject areas:
- - Natural Science
- - Social Sciences
Knowledge equivalent to English B from upper secondary school.
Required results are:
- TOEFL internetbased score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test and a total score of 90.
- TOEFL paperbased score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test and a total score of 575.
- IELTS an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
Selection process
The applicants shall write a letter of intent where the applicant motivates why he/she wants to be enrolled in the programme. Instructions for letter of intent, see below. The final selection among applicants fulfilling the entry requirements will be based on a combined assessment of academic and disciplinary background and the letter of intent written by the applicant. Special consideration will be paid to the letter of intent.
