Plant biotechnology is becoming an increasingly important tool for solving some of the global problems with food and fuel supplies, and ecosystem management, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.
This international Masters Programme offers students the competence and skills to understand and find solutions to these challenges. The programme comprises courses in plant cell and molecular biology as well as plant growth and development.
This expertise is then applied to plant and tree breeding, biotechnology and functional genomics. The programme is intended to provide the students with both theoretical and practical knowledge in plant physiology, molecular biology and biotechnology. It will also give the students a better understanding of the ethical, ecological and legal aspects of plant and forest biotechnology.
Within the programme, you can choose an orientation that is either generally related to biotechnology of all plant systems, or specifically related to forest biotechnology. After finishing this programme the students will be prepared to work in agricultural and forestry biotechnology companies and in national and international organizations dealing with these questions. The programme also prepares the students for postgraduate studies.
The programme is organized by Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), and the education is anchored around the research topics where UPSC researchers are world leading, such as plant developmental biology, abiotic stress biology, forest biotechnology, wood formation and hormone biology.
The programme is based upon coordinated courses that together amount to 120 ECTS credits spread over two years. During the first year, courses will be given in "Plant cell and molecular biology", "Plant growth and development", "Plant biotechnology and molecular breeding" and "Biology and biotechnology in forest production systems". During the second year, students can choose between a range of courses, including the courses in "Functional genomics" and "The practise of science".
The programme also includes a 30 or 60 ECTS degree project. During the programme, the students will learn how to design, perform and report scientific experiments as a preparation for postgraduate studies. All courses will be given in English, and we aim to attract both Swedish and international students to this programme.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
