This MSc provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques of human resource management and development (HRM&D). It enables you to develop competence, techniques and effectiveness in HRM&D, focusing on the crucial role of human resource development in meeting challenges in international development by adding value to economic activities, securing effective public services, and building capabilities within individuals, organisations and societies.
Participants will engage in a critical analysis of best practices in HRM&D, and their application to globalization and international development processes. The programme examines the current international business environment and its diverse nature of social and economic challenges to the management and development of human resources.
Future Career Opportunities
Graduates can go onto careers in human resource management, NGO management, training & HR consultancy, or senior roles within international development agencies, such as the United Nations. In addition, the course provides an excellent foundation for further research through PhD studies.
The programme consists of nine taught modules (8 compulsory, 1 elective) and a dissertation (final research project). You must complete 180 credits to graduate with an MSc degree. You will be assessed for each module. Assessment methods will vary and may include academic essays, reports, presentations, examinations, a research proposal and research dissertation.
Modules*
* Human Resource Management (15 credits): You will develop knowledge and understanding of how to develop HRM strategies specifically recruitment & selection, reward management, performance management and culture management.
* International Organization (15 credits): This module will explore the international agencies, such as the United Nations and the International Labour Organisation and how they shape social and economic polices at country-government level and the global level. It will also explore the role of NGOs in supporting human social and economic development and well-being.
* Human Resource Development (15 credits): You will study how training and career development are employed within cross-cultural environments to improve organizational performance. You will also look at comparative HRM development and examine different institutional systems. The module also assesses how global human development policies incorporate plans for designing and developing equality, social justice and empowerment governance systems.
* Global and Economic Development (15 credits): You will examine the social, cultural, political and economics of globalisation. The module will also explore international development policies to aid social justice, equality and human advancement.
* Managerial Strategy (15 credits): You will study the latest theories and best practice of organisational direction, mission and values, and corporate strategy.
* Organizational Behaviour and Leadership (15 credits): You will study the latest theories on teams and leadership, power, culture politics and group decision making.
* New Module (15 credits): An additional compulsory module is yet to be confirmed.
* Elective (15 credits): Depending on availability and your area of interest you can chose to study from a number of optional modules, which may include Managerial Finance, Global Business Ethics, Operations Management, Knowledge Management & Development.
* Research Methods (15 credits): This module teaches you the latest skills in academic research, in order to prepare you for your final dissertation. You will study the formulation of research questions, the design of the research process, and investigation methods, while providing a critical reflection of your strengths and weaknesses, knowledge and understanding of research design and methods for small scale research.
* Dissertation (45 credits): Building on the other modules in the course, you will conduct a critical appraisal of the academic literature, which will be followed by primary research in your chosen specialist area. An analysis and evaluation of your qualitative and/or quantitative data will then allow you to present a further academic critique with appropriate and coherent recommendations for the business sector.
