Liverpool Hope’s MSc Psychology is designed as a conversion course and is accredited by the British Psychological Society. It offers graduates from other subjects the opportunity to start a new career in Psychology. In addition, the programme is available to Psychology graduates who completed a Psychology degree which did not have accreditation from the British Psychological Society.
On successful completion of the programme students will become eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS). GBC is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist. Eligibility to GBC is the prerequisite for entry onto postgraduate and professional training courses offered by the BPS.
The programme covers the key topics of Psychology such as Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Personality and Individual Differences and underpins these topics with research carried out in the Department. It has a strongcomponent of Research Methods and Statistics which enables the successful candidates to design and conduct research not only in Psychology but also in other areas of social sciences.
The programme is taught at Liverpool Hope’s Psychology Department. The Department is research active with increasing strength in CognitivePsychology. As a Masters student of Psychology you will be directly involved in ongoing research projects as part of your learning experience.
Career Opportunities
This MSc opens up a wide range of career opportunities in Psychology and beyond, as you will have a broad array of research skills which can be applied to virtually any organizational setting. As a graduate of the MSc Psychology you will get access to postgraduate professional training courses offered by the BPS. This includes careers in Clinical Psychology, Counselling, Educational Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology, Occupational Psychology and Sport Psychology. You will also be well qualified to continue research towards PhD and pursue an academic career.
During your studies you will acquire a broad range of transferable skills such as communication skills, problem solving, numeracy and statistical skills, critical and creative thinking, decision making, organisational skills, teamworking, and IT skills. With these skills Psychology graduates are well placed for careers and further training in Health and Social Care, Marketing and PR, Management and Human Resources, Education and other fields in the Public Sector.
The programme consists of four taught modules and a dissertation (final research project). You will be assessed for each module. Assessment methods will vary and may include academic essays, reports, presentations, examinations, a research proposal and research dissertation.
Modules
* Brain and Mind (30 credits): Brain and Mind covers the topics in Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience including history of these areas. This includes psychobiological and cognitive explanations to behaviour and communication, perception, attention, memory, learning, thinking and emotion.
* Individual and Group (30 credits): Individual and Group includes Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology and Personality/ Individual Differences including history. The module makes students familiar with theories of the development of psychological processes in evolution and livelong learning, will address major approaches to understanding development and explore issues related to cognitive development, gender socialisation, identity development, language development and moral development. Students will also study theories of personality and individual differences, intelligence and psychological testing, social group processes, social perception, leadership, social influence, group stereotypes and prejudice.
* Research Methods and Data Analysis 1 (30 credits): This module provides a comprehensive overview of a diverse range of quantitative and qualitative research methods and the necessary practical skills required for their application. You will learn research design and basic statistics (qualitative and quantitative methods, experimental designs, statistical testing, parametric and non-parametric tests, factorial designs, Analysis of Variance, correlation, regression etc.).
* Research Methods and Data Analysis 2 (30 credits): This module introduces students to more advanced quantitative and qualitative methods, and builds upon Research Methods and Data Analysis 1. You will further your knowledge on qualitative and quantitative methods with a more applied focus (Factor Analysis, Cluster Analysis, logistic regression, multidimensional scaling, meta-analysis etc.).
* Research Dissertation (60 credits): The dissertation module allows students to develop their own research project, including planning, designing, execution and presentation of research findings at postgraduate level. You will produce a report or publishable quality and format under supervision of an experienced member of the Psychology team.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testNormally an Honours degree (minimum 2.2) in any subject, plus minimum GCSE Maths grade C (or Equivalent).
The programme is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English are normally required to have an IELTS 6.5 (including reading 6, writing 6), TOEFL paper based 560, TOEFL ibt 83 or other equivalent recognised English language qualification.
