The MA Education programme is designed for practicing teachers, educators and others with a personal or professional interest in the field of education.The programme aims to provide opportunities for engagement with key theories, concepts and ideas in education.

The structure of the programme is flexible enough to meet the needs of those seeking to develop a more academic understanding of the field and those aspiring to develop understanding through critical reflection on practice. The programme will help you to adopt best practice, promote innovation and manage change.

The varied combinations of courses available allow teachers, educators and others to critically analyse and respond to educational and social issues within the context of theory, research and practice. The programme is designed to meet both the academic and professional needs of those teaching, coaching, managing and leading in all sectors of education. A generic award is available as well as a named award that can be gained through combination of specialist courses.

It will enable you to evaluate adults and children's learning through research and postgraduate study. For teachers, this course will enhance opportunities to move beyond threshold and become an 'excellent teacher'.
Students completing this Masters will also be well placed to pursue doctoral research (EdD or PhD) based on interest, expertise and knowledge developed throughout the course.


Contents

The full Masters award requires you to gain 180 credits, including a research dissertation in a specialised area of your choice. Prior to a dissertation, students will complete four 30 credit courses. Courses are organised into four complementary themes.

At the Postgraduate Certificate stage, students complete two courses from the themes ‘Critical analysis of professional practice’ and ‘Contemporary issues and innovation in Education and Society’. At the Postgraduate Diploma stage, a third specialist course is available in the theme ‘Exploring specialist interests’. The fourth 30 credit course is a core compulsory research methods course and we recommend students select this as their final module at the Postgraduate Diploma stage.

At the postgraduate diploma stage, students have a free choice from a range of specialist courses or they may select again from the themes ‘Critical analysis of professional practice’ and ‘Contemporary issues and innovation in Education and Society’.

The fourth 30 credit course is a core compulsory research methods course.

At the dissertation stage, students complete a 60 credit, 18,000 – 20,000 word research study.

Research Environment

Teaching is informed by the research interests of Education Deanery staff at Liverpool Hope University, including Professors Chris Atkin, Bart McGettrick, and Paul Ernst. A particular area of research strength is professional learning, pedagogy and education, the child and the family, Christian education and international and developmental educations. Members of the team also support interdisciplinary research projects in Learning & Teaching and Learning Technologies, and the Centre for Higher Education Research & Development.

The Faculty of Education’s new building - The Centre of Excellence in Education, Innovation and Enterprise – is due to open in late September 2010. The Centre will provide MA Education students with state of art virtual and physical teaching facilities. The building will house a lecture theatre, meeting space for staff and students, seminar rooms and refreshment facilities.

* A good honours degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent.
* Please note that a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau is required for students where they are required to visit settings other than their own

English language requirement: The programme is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English are normally required to have an IELTS 6.5 (reading 6, writing 6), TOEFL paper based 560, TOEFL ibt 83 or other equivalent recognised English language qualification.

In the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), which is the official evaluation of the quality of research undertaken within UK higher education institutions, subject areas of Theology & Religious Studies, and Social Work & Social Policy, included work which ranked as of 4-star ‘world leading’. The subject areas of Computer Science and Informatics, Psychology, Education, English, and Music included work which ranked as 3-star ‘internationally recognised’, as was Politics and International Studies (including submissions from Business) and Drama ranked as 2*.
