Aesthetic medicine has been defined by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) as 'a set of non-surgical clinical procedures which aims to rejuvenate the dermis and reverse the signs of the ageing process upon it'. It also includes a similar set of procedures which addresses the dermal resultants of pathologies and injuries, e.g. scarring and lypodystrophy.
This innovative diploma provides an opportunity for practitioners in the specialist area of aesthetic medicine to gain a nationally recognised higher education qualification which is professionally endorsed by the RCN. The qualification is the first of its kind and incorporates the RCN competencies. It is provided online and is therefore accessible to practitioners at a time and place to suit their needs.
The programme aims to provide an academic qualification that recognises practitioners' existing skills and experience. It is aimed at doctors, adult nurses and dentists delivering aesthetic treatment, and current students are drawn from both private practice and the NHS. This is the first and, at present, only accredited programme of study in the field of aesthetics.
Courses are offered online through e-learning (using virtual classrooms, chat rooms, etc.) with some laboratory-based skills assessments. This means that students can expand and consolidate their skills within their own clinical settings. Assessment for these specialist courses is by online submission and objective structured clinical examination at the University of Greenwich.
Aims of the programme
* To develop students' knowledge so they can select and apply appropriate skills to practice in aesthetic medicine
* To enhance professional accountability and decision-making skills in practice
