Umeå University offers a two-year Master programme in Chemistry given in English with three profiles; Environmental Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Protein Chemistry.
The chemistry programme aims to provide knowledge and skills for solving and critically assessing chemistry-related problems. You will learn how to compile, analyze, critically review, and present scientific texts and your own data. The first year include three in-depth courses that cover tools and theories in modern chemistry that bring you to a level required for the following profile courses. The training provided in these courses primarily focuses on advanced instrumental methodologies for chemical analysis, and modelling and interpretation of physico-chemical and biochemical phenomena. These courses also offer intense laboratory training to prepare you well for more advanced courses and work towards your Master´s thesis in the second year.
The Master´s project is a research project completed under the guidance of a supervisor, defended in public, and by a written thesis. The three profiles of the master programme match the strong research areas of the Chemistry Department:
* Environmental Chemistry
* Medicinal Chemistry
* Protein Chemistry
The master's program has three specializations in chemistry, namely medicinal chemistry, environmental chemistry and protein chemistry. These have in common three compulsory basic courses of 45 credits followed by a number of optional courses. The program also includes a degree project of at least 30 credits.
Basic courses
The three basic courses of the programme cover in total 45 credits. These courses are; “Advanced Experimental Tools in Chemistry”, “Biophysical-Chemical Concepts”, and “Chemometrics and Computational Chemistry”. For the basic courses, the student has guaranteed admission.
Optional courses
Optional courses are applied for in open competition. Optional courses from other seats of learning may qualify to be included in the degree. Courses given below are recommended for the each specialization.
Medicinal Chemistry
* Advanced organic chemistry 15 credits
* Medicinal Chemistry 15 credits
* Computer-aided drug design and Parallel synthesis 15 credits
Environmental Chemistry
* Advanced Environmental Chemistry 15 credits
* Environmental Analytical Chemistry 15 credits
Protein Chemistry
* Protein Separation Methods and Analytical Techniques 15 credits
* Protein Structure Determination 15 credits
* Biochemistry: Protein Structure and Function 15 credits
