Our two-year, part-time Executive MBA provides a combination of flexibility and academic excellence. Teaching takes place over 4-day blocks (normally Wednesday to Saturday) approximately every 6 weeks, so you can continue working whilst completing your studies - ideal for today’s busy professional. You also benefit from the peer interaction that comes from being taught at the business school.
Our part-time Executive MBA attracts a diverse student intake from a wide range of managerial functions in both the private and public sector. With an average age of around 35, participants bring with them a wide range of experience.
One reason that the Durham Executive MBA is special is the emphasis we place on maintaining a balance between hard analytical skills and the development of softer leadership skills. We recognise that soft skills, such as effective communication, self-awareness and the ability to adapt to change quickly are increasingly important in the modern business world. We encourage you to base your assignments and projects on real work issues, thus offering immediate benefits to both you and your organisation.
An intensive International Study Experience of around a week takes place in the second year. There is usually a choice of destinations around the world. With a mixture of company and organisation visits, lectures and cultural events, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in and understand the business environment of another country.
A key innovation within the Executive Durham MBA programme is our exciting boardroom activity that integrates learning from the core modules into a live boardroom situation.
The Executive MBA programme is both challenging and demanding, but our commitment to meaningful support and a first-class teaching and learning environment means we have a very high completion rate.
Careers Support Durham Business School graduates are highly employable individuals. As part of our commitment to our MBA students we offer numerous facilities, services and resources to help you realise your career aspirations and goals.
We can provide professional advice and help in key areas such as: career planning and strategy; CVs and applications; routes into the job market; self-employment; and job search.
Further online support is available via the university DUO system which provides up to date and relevant career guidance and access to DBS resources.
There is also the DBS network. Students find access to DBS alumni and business partners, for example, particularly useful in helping to fulfil their career aspirations.
The programme begins in late January with an intensive one-week induction designed to introduce you to the Business School, the MBA team and your fellow students.
The Executive MBA programme consists of three elements: seven compulsory core modules, five electives and a 15,000-word dissertation.
Teaching takes place over 4-day blocks (normally Wednesday to Saturday) approximately every 6 weeks.
Core modules
The core provides a foundation of knowledge and understanding. There are seven core modules:
* Managing in the Competitive Environment
* Managing in the Global Environment
* Managing Finance
* Managing People
* Modelling and Analysis for Business
* Strategic Management
* Methods of Inquiry.
Core modules are normally assessed by exam and assignment.
Electives
Electives provide an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills in areas of particular interest to you, and that are relevant to your future career. You can tailor your MBA to a particular specialism or choose a generalist route. Smaller classes, inter-active participation and varied modes of teaching and learning make the elective classes an exciting part of the Executive MBA process.
The electives we offer vary depending on current faculty, research and relevance to business. Those given below were on offer in 2009.
* Corporate Finance
* Globalising Strategic Management
* Change Management
* Business Transformation through Information Systems
* Management Consultancy
* Strategic Innovation
* Project Management
* Leadership
* Strategic Marketing
* Strategic Supply Chain Management
* Small Business Management
Please note that there is no separate elective on Corporate Social Responsibility, as CSR is already embedded throughout the Durham MBA. The school is a member of EABIS, the European Association of Business in Society.
Most electives are assessed by assignment, teamwork and/or presentations.
Dissertation
The Executive MBA programme culminates in a 15,000-word dissertation on a business topic chosen by you and overseen by a faculty member with relevant academic/consultancy experience. This is a very rewarding part of the MBA learning experience, and often a stepping-stone to the next career move.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
