The MA programme offers students a distinctive approach to understanding recent changes in Brazil and the impact of its social, cultural, economic and political development. It includes examination of issues such as industrialisation, urbanisation, economic growth and globalisation; oscillation between military and civilian rule; mass movements demanding a variety of civil, political, and economic rights; complicated and contested constitutional, legal and political reforms; and cultural and social change.
It is built around two core courses; the first introduces students to a selected set of important issues that have arisen in Brazil in recent decades, and the second provides a historical overview of Brazil’s relations with the rest of the world, from independence to the present day:
Contemporary Brazil
Brazil in the WorldStudents take at least two further courses from a list of ten offered by Brazil Institute faculty, but also have access to a range of external modules offered by departments across the Schools of Arts & Humanities and Social Science & Public Policy.
The MA is based in the newly established King’s Brazil Institute and benefits from a growing and dynamic staff strongly committed to research and teaching. Students also benefit from the expertise of Associates of the King’s Brazil Institute, who are based in a number of disciplinary departments across the College.
