Project OrganisationThis summer school project is an Erasmus IP project, which is supported by the Utrecht Network and carried out by the University of Graz, represented by the Center for the Study of the Americas (C.SAS) in cooperation with the Vice Rectorate for International Relations.
Aims and ObjectivesThe Summer School offers a platform to students and teachers from international universities to engage in the interdisciplinary analysis of new conceptual approaches for a redefinition of the Americas in times of worldwide globalization. Thematic seminars in the respective fields allow students to strengthen their understanding of complex issues in their study areas. The discursive and symbolic constructions of the Americas are investigated from the vantage point of politics, history, law, literature, film, gender, culture and Jewish Studies in order to determine the feasibility of an inter-American identity.
Target GroupThe target group are highly motivated students from all faculties holding a bachelor degree, or students working on their final thesis.
Recognition of Credits (ECTS)6 ECTS will be awarded to students for participation in the Summer School and the successful completion of a seminar paper.
The Graz University Summer School is also designed to be integrated into the curricula of Joint Degree programs on master level. For the University of Graz, it can be accredited for the following programs:
* English and American Studies
* Jewish Studies – History of Cultures of the Jews,
* Sustainable Development
* Gender Studies
If you are enrolled in one of the mentioned a Joint Degree programs, please contact your JD-coordinator for further information.
Depending on their study programs, each student can apply for one of the following seminars:
1. Film & Society: Film as a form of cultural expression offers multiple representations of reality contributing to the construction of social stereotypes and identities, creating social and/or political statements. In this seminar a variety of films will be analyzed as to their ways of delivering a message related to identity issues in the Americas.
2. Literature I & II: These seminars will offer insights into the historical development of a hemispheric approach to literature in the Americas. Discussing works of Canadian, US-American as well as Latin American writers and spanning various genres and time periods, the courses will emphasize that literature per se transcends linguistic, political and geographical borders and that a better understanding of it will be achieved by an Inter-American approach.
3. Identities: The search for and construction of American identities is at the core of this seminar which will focus on the shifting of identities between their national, infra-national, supra-national and continental definitions that have emerged in the last decades throughout the Americas. An overview of current debates in cultural studies and social theory will show that traditional categorizations are no longer sufficient for conceptualizing cultural and ethnic borders and spaces.
4. Economics: This seminar considers the economic development of the US and the other countries of the Americas over the past century. The sessions will pay particular attention to the reasons why there has been sustained economic growth in some nations while others have faced repeated crises, the changing character of economic relationships between countries through, for example, the signing of free trade agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA, MERCOSUR, and CAFT-DR), and the region's resilience to the global downturn. The seminar will draw upon selected economic concepts and, on the basis of these, explore broader economic, political, social and cultural processes.
5. Sustainability: This seminar will explore the tensions between continental integration in terms of sustainability of resource management and territorial claims with their impact on identity politics. Transcending the narrow confines of national perspectives, the course sets out to explore aspects that influence identity constructions, different spatial discourses, and trans-border cooperation regarding environmental and developmental challenges.
6. Jewish Studies: This module deals with various aspects of Jewish history and Jewish identities in the 19th and 20th century. One week will deal with the history of Jewish migration from Europe to the Americas. Discussing the manifold reasons why Jews left their homes (voluntary or forced migration), the course will focus on the structure, the process and problems of migration, and the impact of migration on Jewish identities. The other week will emphasize on the relation of trauma theory to the destruction and formation of Jewish identities, nation-building, and individual and collective struggles.
7. Gender Studies: Gender Studies ask how gender differences and identities emerge from an interplay of media, cultural, aesthetic, social and political technologies – as effects of knowledge and power – rather than aiming to define what gender ‚is’. Introduced as the ‚opposite of sex’ the differentiation between biological and cultural gender is troubling in itself. This module will deal with various gender-related aspects by focusing in particular on issues of the Americas.
