The course can be studied full-time over 15 months or part-time over 30 months.

Contents

The MSc Risk Management consists of eight core units and a research dissertation. Units of study are:

* Strategic Risk Management explores the theoretical frameworks and interdisciplinary nature of risk and effective risk management in organisations.
* Organisational Risk investigates the concepts of organisational risk and corporate security. These include major aspects of IT security, physical security, company fraud and related contemporary issues in security management.
* Environmental Risk highlights the application of regulatory requirements from European Union and UK legislation, and the evaluation of first and second order risks on organisations. Environmental risk frameworks and the impact of environmental risk management strategies are also explored.
* Business Continuity and Crisis Management studies the development of effective continuity and crisis planning. Scenario planning will be examined, including how to develop and use key frameworks and procedures for organisational training as preparation for crises.
* Corporate Governance examines the business value of effective corporate governance in organisations, together with key internal controls and accountability. Subjects include stakeholder analysis, management and board effectiveness, and their influence on risk planning and development.
* Project Risk focuses on project risk management processes, systems and technology. Central to the unit is a consideration of the key challenges in the application of project risk identification and response frameworks.
* People and Skills in Risk Management explores the importance of human factors and people skills in risk perception and management. The roles of the individuals, teams and leaders are examined in the context of developing and implementing risk management policies and strategies.
* Research Methods will develop research and analysis skills for critical cross-disciplinary investigations. Key areas of research design studied include the nature of measurement, the use of appropriate techniques, and methods of quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
* The Dissertation comprises the final part of the course. You will undertake a 15,000-word management research project (dissertation) that combines a review of previous research undertaken in your chosen topic, with your own data collection and analysis. The research project provides a unique opportunity for you to demonstrate the subject knowledge you have acquired, as well as your analytical abilities and problem-solving skills that are highly regarded by potential employers. During this phase, your research will be supervised by an experienced academic with expertise in your chosen topic area.
