Programme Description

DILL (International Master in Digital Library Learning) is a two-year master program for information professionals who intend to work in the complex world of digital libraries.

The course is designed to preparing a group of 30 students (maximum) from European and third countries, including librarians, archivists, curators, administrators, technologists, who have or will have responsibility for managing digital conversion programs and/or of implementing digital libraries and of doing digital library education programs.The International Master in Digital Library Learning (DILL) aims at developing a competitive and unique European Masters Course in order to prepare high level information professionals who intend to work in the complex world of digital libraries.

The first semester is offered in Oslo, Norway, at Oslo University College. The second semester will be offered in Tallinn, Estonia, at Tallinn University. The third semester will be offered in Parma, Italy, at Parma University. The fourth semester involves writing the Master Thesis. The students can choose to spend the fourth semester at either of the three partner institutions. This depends on the subject of the master project and the location of the main supervisor.

DILL is a two-year Master Degree (120 ECTS credits). All students will follow a given structure, spending at least one semester at all three partner institutions: Oslo University College, Tallinn University, and Parma University. The reading lists are published under each module, but in addition, there are two books that will be used throughout the programme:

* Lesk, M. (2004). Understanding Digital Libraries (Second ed.). San Francisco, CA: Morgan Kaufman Publishers.
* Witten, I.H. & Bainbridge, D. (2003). How to Build a Digital Library. San Francisco, CA: Morgan Kaufman Publishers.

First Semester (autumn)

The first semester is offered in Oslo, Norway, at Oslo University College. After a preliminary summer school in August, students follow two modules:

* Research Methods and Theory of Science (15 ECTS)
* Digital Documents (15 ECTS)

Second Semester (spring)

The second semester is offered in Tallinn, Estonia, at Tallinn University. Students follow two modules:

* Information and Knowledge Management (15 ECTS)
* Human Resource Management (15 ECTS)

Third Semester (autumn)The third semester is offered in Parma, Italy, at Parma University. Following a second summer school, students follow two modules:

* Access to Digital Libraries (15 ECTS)
* Users and Usage of Digital Libraries: Quantitative and Qualitative Evaluation (15 ECTS)

During the third semester, students will also undertake a work placement, in either Parma, Tallinn or Oslo.

Fourth Semester (spring) * Master Thesis (30 ECTS)

Students can choose to write their Master Thesis at either of the three partner institutions, depending on the subject of the thesis and the location of the student´s main supervisor.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

European/Third-Country Students

Dill will admit both European and so-called third-country (i.e. non-EU/EEA-EFTA) students. However, only third-country students can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. More information about the scholarship and the definition of third-country students is found under Scholarship.

Requirements for all DILL students:

* A degree in Library and Information Science (based on no less than three years of full-time study - 180 ECTS) or equivalent qualifications, such as a degree in another relevant subject.
* English skills. Students from non-English speaking countries must have passed:
* either IELTS (International English Language Testing System) (minimum score: 5.5 points)
* or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) (minimum score: 550 on the paper based test, 213 on the computer based test, or 79 on the Internet based test)
* Not all applicants need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS test certificate. If you are in doubt as to whether or not you may be exempted, please contact the DILL Administration for more information.
* Knowledge and skills of computers for information use.


To apply to the DILL Master Programme, please submit the following documents: * Completed application form (PDF)
* A recently updated CV
* A short statement of purpose (approx. 500 words), for example describing your motivation, subjects of interest, what you would like to achieve, and so forth
* Documentation of secondary education
* Documentation of university education:
* Diplomas/transcripts that clearly show the subjects studied and the duration/weighting of each subject.
* Subject descriptions (for example copied from your university's programme catalogue
* Description of the grading scale used

* TOEFL/IELTS test certificate (if appliccable)
* 1-3 recent, signed reference letters
* If you have changed your name, or you name does not appear the same on all documents, please enclose an official attestation of name change

All documents should be in English. If the original language of a document is not English, an official translation should be submitted in addition to the original.If you do not submit officially certified copies/originals of your application documents, any offer of admission will be on the condition that you do so.
