Location of OPAL College London

The programme aims to provide a broad education in ICT, as a foundation both for training, leading to employment, and for further studies. Students will develop a range of practical skills in business software along with aspects of computer systems, information systems and web development.

This qualification is suitable for learners who wish to progress directly into employment in ICT and for those who wish to gain more understanding of the applications of ICT as a basis for other jobs.

Programme Objectives

The BTEC Firsts in IT have been developed to:

  • provide education and training for those employed in IT
  • give those employed in IT opportunities to achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 vocationally specific qualification
  • give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the IT sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Nationals in IT
  • give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

The programme comprises of three core units and four specialist units (Total 60 credits).

    6. Spreadsheet Modelling
    7. Multimedia Design

How will I be assessed?

You will be given a range of assignments for which you are required to provide evidence in a variety of ways including presentations and written work. All your work will be assessed by tutors who will give you continuous feedback so that you can improve throughout the year.

How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?

This is a full time course. Successful completion of this course will require a combination of self study and tutor directed study. Normally you will spend 15-18 hours of tutor directed study every week at College with further time being spent on assignment work and research which can be done whilst at College or at home.

What can I do when I complete the course?

A successful learner would be able to go into employment within IT related work or if you wished to continue at College you could go onto the BTEC National Diploma which is a two year course. You must have passed all units and have a level 2 Key Skill in Communications.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

The minimum age for registration for this programme is 18

  • Four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Math OR
  • A full Level 1 vocational qualification at Merit or Distinction Grade, plus GCSE-equivalent L1 Functional English and Maths qualifications
  • A reference is required, either from a current personal tutor/course leader or from recent work
  • Satisfactory interview with course tutor
