The Master's programme in Artistic Research seeks to form a bridge between art and research offering insight into and training in new forms of research.
The University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Master's programme in Artistic Research is unique in the Netherlands, providing an alternative to the at times artificial opposition between professional art training and academic programmes for the study of art in the Netherlands. The Master's programme in Artistic Research takes an experimental approach to both specific art objects and broader artistic concepts and opens them up to interpretation. Topics and strategies relevant for current scholarly debates and contemporary artistic practice are central. This Master's reflects the flourishing practice of national and international research in the arts.
Contents
Part of this programme is taught in collaboration with other (internal or external) art institutes. In such cases, the programme is carried out by the ‘supplying' institute. Examples are: the professional art training programmes at the Amsterdam School of the Arts and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy/Sandberg Institute, and the academic programmes at the schools of Art, Religion and Cultural Studies at the Graduate School for Humanities of the University of Amsterdam.
Programme outline
Artistic Research yields 120 ECTS credits:
- 30 credits for core courses of the Research MA Art Studies (Kunstwetenschappen)
- 40 credits for core courses combining theory and practice
- 20 credits for electives
- 30 credits for a one-semester research project resulting in a thesis and an artistic work.
The specific number of credits a student is required to obtain through coursework is determined by the admissions committee and is based on the student's previous qualifications. Fulfilment of all the requirements will take at least one year.
Thesis
The research project and thesis together provide a sample of the student's artistic research, which is carried out at an art institution. A committee of supervisors and external experts are responsible for the project/thesis evaluation. The subject of the research project and the subsequent thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and academic adviser(s). The project and thesis are completed in one semester.
Degree awarded
Artistic Research is a specialisation of the Dutch Master's programme in Art Studies. Students who successfully complete this programme receive a Master‘s degree in Arts and Culture and the title Master of Arts (MA).
Credit transfer
Students who show exceptional promise during a Regular or Professional programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research programme. Once students are admitted to the Research programme, they can transfer the credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research Master's degree. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Grade average: 1) A /3.8 (American system), 2) 2.1 HONS (an upper second class honours degree in the British system), 3) B (ECTS-system), or 4) 7.5 (Dutch system).
Previous education: Applicants for the Master's programme should have at least a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in a relevant field. The level of the Bachelor's degree must be comparable to that of a Dutch Bachelor's degree. Applicants with Bachelor's degrees in art studies and/or fine arts are encouraged to apply. Students with an academic background in art studies must have experience in art practice or be able to demonstrate a relation between their academic work and practice. Students with a fine arts background and no art studies experience can be asked to complete an academic preparatory programme first. The nature of this programme and the limited availability of research places at art institutes and companies means that only a small number of students can be accepted each year.
