This programme is run by the School of Physiology and Pharmacology, but encompasses staff from other Schools and Faculties including the Henry Wellcome Laboratories for Integrative Neuroscience and Endocrinology (LINE) and Computer Science. The programme provides intensive training in a range of neuroscience research areas and techniques, with particular emphasis on approaches that include study of the intact nervous system in animal models, for example behavioural testing, in vivo pharmacology, in vivo electrophysiology and brain imaging. Many of these experimental approaches generate large and complex datasets and can be enhanced by combination with theoretical modelling; the programme therefore also provides training in the fundamentals of computational neuroscience.

In addition to basic principles, translational links to nervous system diseases will be highlighted throughout. Staff teaching on the programme research a range of disorders including schizophrenia, depression and anxiety, Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease. Collaborators from the pharmaceutical industry will also contribute, emphasizing the usefulness of in vivo techniques in drug discovery.

The programme is suitable for students from indirectly related backgrounds (e.g. Computer Science) wishing to transition into neuroscience, or for biologists wishing to specialize in Systems Neuroscience approaches. Graduates of the programme would be well placed to continue postgraduate training within the Bristol Neuroscience community, including on the Wellcome Trust programme in Neural Dynamics.
