The aim of the course is to bring you in twelve months to a position where you can start with confidence on a wide range of careers at the interface between Mathematics and Biology, including a PhD in an interdisciplinary area within the Biophysical Sciences Institute (BSI) at charming medieval Durham.

The Institute is an exciting new initiative that brings together research excellence and expertise from across all of the Departments in Durham University’s Science Faculty.

A characteristic of the BSI, that distinguishes it from similar activities elsewhere, is to use experiment, theory and simulation in a completely integrated, multi-scale approach to the solution of biological problems. By embarking on this MSc programme, you join a vibrant team of scientists working at the frontiers of research on biological processes such as stress, ageing and signalling mechanisms, and dynamics within the cell. Such research will in turn lead to the development of new enabling technologies for application in further research, medicine, as well as industrial and social development.

Mathematics plays a privileged and essential role in this new venture. It provides a framework within which one attempts to organise the plethora of data biologists are now able to collect, thanks to the nanotechnology revolution. It underlies the construction of a new generation of models, where ideas from physics and chemistry are incorporated in order to describe many biological processes in a way that predictions can be made.


Contents

The course consists of four modules: the first three are taught during Michaelmas and Epiphany, and are assessed by examinations in January, April and May. The fourth module is a dissertation on a topic of current interdisciplinary research, prepared under the guidance of a supervisor with expertise in the area. The dissertation must be submitted around mid-September (the exact date may vary from year to year), the end of the twelve month course period.

Module 1: Core Biomathematics I (6 units of 15 lectures each, including Biological Physics I, Computational Mechanics, Crystallographic Groups, Modeling of Macrobiomolecule Dynamics, Quantum Mechanics of Biomaterials, Systems Biology)

Module 2: Core Biomathematics II (5 units of 15 lectures each, including Biological Physics II, Introduction to Protein Crystallography, Soft Condensed Matter Inspired Biology, Mathematical Virology, as well as 10 training sessions on Communicating Science, assessed by a powerpoint presentation and a poster on a topic of relevance to biology)

Module 3: Biomathematics III (2 courses of 38 lectures each, chosen amongst the following undergraduate modules: Bayesian Statistics, Continuum Mechanics, Dynamical Systems, Mathematical Virology, Partial Differential Equations, Statistical Methods, Stochastic Processes)

Module 4: Dissertation (an essay of about 60 pages on a topic of current research at the interface between Mathematics and Biology at Durham, under the guidance of a supervisor)

Requirements

The masters programmes are intended for new and recent graduates with a strong background in mathematics, physics, engineering or chemistry.

Normal entry requirements for an MSc programme are:

* A good first degree in mathematics, physics, engineering or natural sciences with a strong component of mathematics (equivalent to a 2.I or first class degree in the UK system).

* Evidence of competence in written and spoken English if your first language is not English. The minimum TOEFL requirement is 573 (230 computer based, 89 internet based) with a TWE of 4.5
* We ask for an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no element under 6.0.
* Other relevant language experience may be acceptable instead. e.g. taking a degree where English was the medium of instruction.
