Business Studies 14–19

Business Studies is an expanding subject in the 14 - 19 curriculum, both in the vocational education and non- vocational arena. There are numerous 14-19 business qualifications taught in surrounding schools including: GCSEs, AS, A2, Applied GCSE, Applied A levels, BTEC National courses and from 2009 the new Diplomas. The changes that are planned over the next ten years in education will place Business Studies in a strong position both in schools, colleges and universities in the UK.

The PGCE course will train you to be part of an exciting, rewarding and changing profession that will help equip young people to understand the business world in which they live and help them to make informed decisions about their choices as citizens, employees and consumers.

Are you interested in helping young people to achieve these goals? Do you have the ability to inspire and motivate teenagers? If so, then the PGCE course at University of Portsmouth might be a chance to make a difference by joining a worthwhile profession and sharing your experience with others.

Contents

The course is essentially practical and two-thirds of your time will be spent in school or college where you will be teaching young people from the age of 14 to 19 years. You will be working closely with experienced teachers, both in university and in your school/college placements, who will act as your mentor.

Throughout the year you will be engaged in considering a range of elements:

* Developing your subject expertise through a series of "master classes", independent study, observing good teaching and teaching yourself
* Using current issues to relate your subject to the everyday lives of young people
* Developing your own ICT skills and using these effectively to enhance learning
* Planning lessons that enable all the youngsters in your class to achieve and develop
* Assessing to ensure that effective learning has taken place
* Managing behaviour and the classroom environment
* Researching into the pedagogy and psychology of learning
