The MSc Crisis and Disaster Management is an innovative course, developed by internationally recognised experts with cross-disciplinary expertise from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Portsmouth Business School at the University of Portsmouth. The course is a mixture of taught units and a research project, covering hazards (geological, meteorological, biological and technical), vulnerability and risk assessments, disaster risk reduction, emergency planning, financial planning for disaster, business continuity strategies and disaster management.

* develop mapping skills using Geographical Information Systems to analyse spatial data

School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES)
SEES is one of the leading providers of applied geosciences graduates in the UK, with strong research and industry links in the UK and overseas. Teaching in SEES is underpinned by active research and consultancy, with many staff members collaborating with industrial and academic partners in the UK and overseas. The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences holds regular postgraduate open days throughout the year. These provide an informal opportunity to see the range of University and department facilities, plus give you a chance to discuss the course with members of academic staff. The course can be studied full-time over one year or part-time over two years.
The course units are delivered as a series of three-day modules, taught between October and June, with assessment by coursework assignments. The full-time mode of study takes 15 months, with the part-time mode taking 30 months. A summary of the units is given below:
* Hazards, Vulnerability, Risk and Disaster (15 credits): this unit looks at hazards (natural and anthropological), vulnerability and risk. It also covers the characteristics of disasters, their assessment and management.
* Business Continuity and Crisis Management (15 credits): you will learn about continuity and crisis planning, alongside frameworks and procedures for organisational training and preparation for crisis.
* Financial Planning for National Disaster (15 credits): you will explore the economics of disaster (local, national and international), financial management of risk, catastrophe modelling, insurance and reinsurance through a range of case studies from the UK, Turkey and Caribbean small island states.
* Techniques for Disaster Management (15 credits): this unit covers the methods and techniques of use in disaster risk assessment will, contingency management, disaster crisis response, GPS and GIS mapping for search and rescue activities, and refugee management.
* Crisis Management Study Visits (15 credits): you will spend six days in the Bay of Naples/Vesuvius region of Italy studying the interaction between multiple hazards (volcanos, earthquakes, tsunami, landslides), the vulnerability of this densely populated region, emergency planning strategies and disaster management measures.
* Project Risk (15 credits): this unit looks at project risk management processes, systems and technology, as well as risk identification and response frameworks.
* Research Methods (15 credits): you will develop research and critical analysis skills for cross-disciplinary investigations in this unit, including quantitative and qualitative approaches. These skills will be initially applied to the planning and implementation of your Research Project.
* Research Project (60 credits): this project combines your chosen research topic with data that you have collected and analysed, so that you will be able to demonstrate to potential employers your analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.
You will also choose one of the following units:
* Natural Disasters (option) (15 credits): geological, meteorological, biological and technological disasters; rapid-onset and slow-onset/chronic disasters; impacts of climate change, disaster management and mitigation.
* Organisational Risk (option) (15 credits): identification and management of corporate security and organisational risks.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
