Property is an important, high-value business asset and sound professional advice on its development and use is increasingly sought. Working in the quantity surveying sector makes for an interesting, challenging and exciting career. It is well paid and very sociable. It gets you out of the office and you will meet and work with all sorts of interesting people. The best thing about working in construction is the sheer variety. No two days are ever the same.
Course aims
This course aims to enable you to:
* extend skills of critical analysis, reflection, evaluation, decision making and problem solving so you are able to operate professionally within a frequently changing setting
* develop practical skills needed for everyday work in setting objectives, advising clients and working professionally
* demonstrate levels of research understanding that enable analysis and evaluation of published work and undertake a research project
* develop knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues related to the construction sector as a basis for evidence of informed practice
* demonstrate the ability to offer appropriate advice on the financial management of construction costs and the efficient management of the built environment
The School of Civil Engineering and Surveying
The School of Civil Engineering and Surveying offers an established provision of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses. Based in the award-winning Portland Building, the School shares its facilities with the School of Architecture, providing a vibrant and friendly community for both staff and students involved in the built and natural environments.

The University of Portsmouth has delivered property and surveying courses for over 35 years and is one of the longest established Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited centres. Many of our students now hold senior positions in industry and the quality of our courses has been recognised by both the property profession and national press.
You will be taught by staff from a wide range of commercial, construction and quantity surveying practice, including quantity surveyors, architects, project managers, construction lawyers and structural engineers. Their hands-on experience is reflected in the modern and diverse nature of this course, which provides you with a flexible Master's programme allowing you to tailor the course to suit your own interest and accommodate existing work commitments. You will gain a range of skills that will be of direct benefit in the workplace.
The course can be studied full-time over one year or part-time over two years.
The course develops the themes of construction, law and financial management through eight taught units and a dissertation and may be studied in either full-time (12-month) or part-time (24-month) mode.
Course units
Units you will study are:
* Construction Law, which will provide you with a general understanding and knowledge of the legal system in England and Wales relevant to the practice of a surveyor.
* Construction Management, which will prepare you for the commercial environment of construction.
* Construction Safety, which will enable you to evaluate hazards and risks and apply health and safety management systems for construction projects.
* Construction Technology, which will give you an understanding of building construction and appropriate material use. The unit will also develop the environmental issues related to building services and energy requirements, together with the factors affecting the structural stability of buildings.
* Measurement and Tendering, which will provide you with the techniques and approaches associated with costing construction operations, an understanding of the framework and function of measurement as a management tool and the preparation of tender documentation.
* Professional Practice (QS), which will introduce you to the contractual framework for all quantity surveying post-contract functions, such as monitoring, control and reconciliation.
* Property Procurement, which will give you an understanding of the procurement process, standard forms of contract and the economic context of procurement and tendering in the context of the construction sector.
* Research Design and Methods, which will introduce you to the elements of research programme design and generic research methods and provide practice in research skills in preparation for the writing of your dissertation.
* Dissertation – an individual research project of 12–15,000 words. You will be able to choose a subject area of particular personal interest, within the broad scope of the built environment.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA good honours degree or equivalent professional experience and /or qualifications in an appropriate field.
English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 or equivalent.
