Research at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG) covers theoretical and observational cosmology and astrophysics, and their interface, and is supported by grants from the Research Council STFC, the Royal Society and the European Union.
Most of our research falls under three broad categories:
Early universe and particle cosmology
Inflation, Brane-world Cosmology and String Cosmology, Primordial Perturbations.
Structure formation in the universe
The Cosmic Microwave Background, Galaxy Surveys, Dark Energy, Gravitational Lensing, Cosmic Magnetic Fields, Gravitational Waves.
Galaxy evolution
Stellar Population Models, Chemical Evolution, Galaxies at Low and High Redshift.
The main task of a research student is independent research of the chosen topic, working closely with a director of studies who guides and advises throughout the period of research; at the end of the period of study, the results of the research are embodied in a thesis, which is examined at a viva voce examination when a candidate is required to defend his or her thesis; supervision is available for research in areas including: early universe and particle cosomology; cosmic microwave background; structure formation; string and brane cosmology; black holes; gravity waves; and grid computing.
The course can be studied full-time over two years or part-time over four years.
