Civil engineers are at the forefront of developing sustainable societies and many find themselves dealing with important social and environmental issues. Our research reflects this multi-disciplinary activity by collaborating on joint projects with surveyors, mathematicians, chemists and microbiologists across the globe.
The main task of a research student is independent research of the chosen topic, working closely with a director of studies who guides and advises throughout the research period; at the end of the study period, the results of the research are embodied in a thesis, which is examined at a viva voce examination when a candidate is required to defend their thesis; supervision is available for research in areas including: environmental technology; geotechnics and materials technology; structures and construction technology; environmental engineering; construction management; risk assessment and response to high winds in urban areas; behaviour of foundations; multimedia decision support systems for crib and gravity wall design and construction; and sewage treatment and reuse.
