The Master's degree program in Political Science Education provides students with a wide variety of subject content and interdisciplinary education aimed at acquiring the following qualifications and skills:
1. Political competency to form an educated opinion: ability and alacrity to analyse problems and controversies in politics, industry and society as well as scrutinize points of view and evaluate the resulting behaviour and actions of the involved parties according to rational, i.e. “objective” criteria.
2. Political responsibility and decision-making skills: competencies and alacrity for causatively and argumentatively formulating and articulating individual positions on political questions in order to raise understanding for the needs and attitudes of others and work on solutions for economical and societal problems.
3. Politically oriented method competence: ability and alacrity to have command of and apply appropriate methods of searching for information and building an opinion.
4. Media competence: ability and alacrity to analyze the media and deliberate about it as well as apply it according to didactic methods competence (see below).
5. Social competence: the ability and alacrity to communicate, respond and critically argue and cooperate with other people on a private and professional level.
6. Pedagogical competence: ability and alacrity to initiate, create, deliberate about and ensure educational and personality developmental processes of students in connection with political education.
7. Didactic methods competence: ability and alacrity to process, deliberate about, create, evaluate and further develop constructive educational learning processes according to expertise of the above-mentioned political and political oriented competencies, social competencies and the educational needs of the individual students or audience
8. (Self) relection: individual are affected by the society and on the other hand can to a certain extent, also have an influence upon it. Therefore it is necessary to have the ability to reflect upon the magnitude of each individual’s autonomy.
Potential Career OpportunitiesGraduates of the Master's degree program in Political Science Education are in a position to fulfil the requirements of job profiles in the following professional fields:
- Adult education
- Social work and social work with young adults
- Governmental service
- Positions in national and international institutions in social, political and environmental fields such as non governmental organizations (NGOs)
- Teaching “Political Science” or related subjects in schools, such as the subjects mentioned in the decree “Political Science Eduation” of the Federal Ministry of Education and Art (GZ 33.464/6-19a/78 – Wiederverlautbarung mit GZ 33.466/103-V/4a/94)
- Positions directly connected with politics: local regional and federal politics and jobs in partisan or non-partisan political organizations and institutions etc.
