Whether on our full-time or part-time programme, the Southampton MBA will challenge you to look at business issues from different perspectives in order to find the best solutions. Originally established in 1988, our AMBA accredited MBA is continually updated to reflect the changing nature of the business world. Maintaining AMBA’s high global standard, our objective is to ensure the programme remains relevant and challenging for students and businesses.

Our MBA was significantly revised and restructured in 2008 after a year-long consultation exercise involving students, alumni, employers and teaching staff.
The Southampton MBA is a flexible programme, which enables you to study either full or part-time.

Our MBA will develop your business skills. Its integrative structure will give you the opportunity to consolidate and apply your learning from across the programme to address business issues from new perspectives.

The MBA programme will provide you with:

Full-time
Strategic management and leadership practice are increasingly conducted in an international context of networked organisations. Managers are required to develop sustainable and responsive business solutions. Our AMBA-accredited MBA is academically rigorous, offering a participatory approach to learning, with its integrative, modular curriculum, including research training and consultancy skills.

We place emphasis on keeping as close to real-world business as possible, through various forms of interaction with businesses and organisations. A significant part of the teaching is based on real-life business case studies and practical, action-oriented projects.

Part time
The part-time MBA is suitable if you have at least five years’ significant managerial experience, and you are seeking to further your understanding of, and effectiveness in, the organisational and business context.

Duration: 1 year (full-time); 2–3 years plus 6 months to complete the dissertation (part-time)

Start date: September 2011 (full-time), September 2011 and February 2012 (part-time)


Contents

Full time study on the MBA follows a schedule in which formal instruction takes place on 3 or 4 days per week.The rest of the week is used for group work and individual study.A assessment occurs throughout the course with formal examinations in January.

In accordance with AMBA requirements, participants should expect at least 500 hours of formal contact with our academic staff. Satisfactory performance in the course assessements results in permission to continue to work between July and September to prepare and submit an MBA dissertation.

The MBA is divided into 4 parts:

* Accounting: Measuring and Managing Performance
* Corporate Finance
* Strategy
* Managing People for Performance
* Decision Modelling and Analysis

2. Optional modules Choose two from the range available when you enrol, for example Project Management; Supply Management; Consultancy and Risk.

3. Application of Management Skills for Business Impact A feature of our MBA is the opportunity to use the core elements previously studied in the context of a leader's role. This element of the course highlights creativity; innovation decision analysis; change; and strategic decision making - all skills sought by employers.

4. Dissertation

Requirements

First- or upper second-class honours degree from a UK university; School of Management PG Certificate Business Administration or equivalent overseas/professional qualification. For full-time MBA, at least 3 years’ post-qualification work experience. For part-time MBA, at least 5 years’ managerial-level work experience. Students must be at least 25 years of age at enrolment.

Language RequirementsApplicants whose first language is not English and do not have a degree from a UK university will be required to provide evidence of competency in English by reaching an appropriate standard in an approved text such as IELTS, TOEFL and the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (grades A-C) or the Certificate in Advance English (grades A or B).

* IELTS - Overall score 6.5 or above and all sections scores 6 or above.
* TOEFL (paper based test)- Overall score 580 or above and all sections scores 55 or above.
* TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test) - Overall score 92 or above and all section scores 21 or above.
