This programme is ideal for individuals who wish to gain a world-class award in the subject of One Health. This course is designed to address the demand, especially from veterinary and medical graduates, for a new and stimulating experience in a research/academic environment.
The MSc will be delivered by experts in the discipline, and is open to students with a degree in: Veterinary Science, Medicine or to non-vets with an appropriate Biological Science.
The educational aims of the taught component are to:
* Develop an understanding of the role of comparative medicine and animal models for human disease
* Obtain an up-to-date concept of the current threats of emerging diseases in animals that may threaten human health and of other zoonoses and how these impact food security
* Develop a basic understanding of epidemiological concepts as they relate to infectious diseases of animals, with a focus on those transmissible to humans
* Attain a basic understanding of relevant procedures that are used as aids to biomedical research and disease control (for example, molecular biological and immunochemical)
Learning Outcomes
A master of One Health science should have knowledge and understanding of:
* general concepts of the One Health discipline;
* comparative medicine and animal models as they relate to One Health science;
* zoonoses and emerging diseases;
* food security;
* basic epidemiological concepts, including basic statistics;
* laboratory tools for disease control: molecular biology;
* laboratory tools for disease control: immunochemistry;
* how to prepare a preliminary project proposal;
* the laboratory skills pertaining to their specific research project;
* how do develop oral and written presentation skills;
* how to reflect on their own findings and develop appropriate further research.
How You Will Be Taught
The programme is studied over a period of a year, full-time. It consists of two elements: the taught element (90 credits) and the dissertation element (90 credits).
The taught element of the programme will be divided into 5 compulsory courses taught over 2 semesters.
The dissertation element will commence in semester 2.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testVeterinary degree (BVM&S or equivalent) or medical degree (MBChB or equivalent); intercalating veterinary and medical students.
