Animation is a creative discipline that engages with a wide variety of mediums and subject areas. Using the tools of 2-D and 3-D computer animation, practitioners are shaping our knowledge and understanding in areas as diverse as digital visual effects, medical imaging, architecture and environmental design, product design and film making.
Visualisation skills and methodologies are increasingly applied in the communication of complex scientific and design issues. This expanding field acts as the interface between the public and research communities.
MSc Animation & Visualisation represents an opportunity for animators, artists, designers and those with associated experience, to apply and extend their skills and discourse within both animation and visualisation. The programme offers dedicated 3-D and visual effects facilities providing students with a unique opportunity to develop their own visual practice. The programme also encourages a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving with established links to the School of Computing, Medicine and industrial collaborators.
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) has been rated as the top institution in Scotland for research in art and design, and one of the best in the whole of the UK (RAE 2008).
Students benefit from the DJCAD public lecture programme in Art and Media. This collaborative project with Dundee Contemporary Arts brings invited speakers from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. Students will also be encouraged to attend speaker presentations in English, Film and Philosophy, a University wide Lecture Series and a vibrant external community, for events such as NEoN festival, and Dare to be Digital.
Aims of the Programme:
To develop your understanding, knowledge and skill in a personal programme of intellectually rigorous study, research and technical skills and methods relevant to Media, Animation and Industry Practice, and to develop your capacity for autonomous learning through self managed study.
Career Prospects:
Throughout the programme and on completion students enter their work in national and international competitions and animation festivals in the UK and overseas. Developing the research potential and impact of our postgraduate students is integral to our vision for research. Research focused students are encouraged to participate in research conferences, presentations, colloquia and networks. Guidance is given for those who wish to continue to PhD.
Students will benefit in being associated with an established "3D Visualisation Research Group", set up in 2004, as the research wing of the Centre for Digital Imaging (CDi). The group was established to investigate the application of 3D technologies and techniques in medical imaging, forensics, architecture, anatomy, archaeology and long-term illness patient communication.
