The Master of Design Programme at Dundee links individual creativity with real world issues. The course is multidisciplinary and multicultural, embracing the dynamic role of design with a focus on people-centred design. The innovative one year postgraduate programme attracts talented students from a range of different design disciplines from across the world. Students from undergraduate degrees in graphics, product design, textiles, jewellery, interior and environmental design learn together in a studio setting applying design thinking, methods and strategies to real world problems.
Creativity can be employed in many ways, from the production of products to visualising design solutions to tackle social issues. Our students work individually and in teams to share expertise and knowledge. Design industry professionals and leading academics introduce a wide range of design methods, tools and strategies to help students position themselves as designers who can make a difference.
Aims of the Programme:
- To equip students with the skills to research, develop, evaluate and communicate design solutions;
- To enable students to articulate the particular skills of the designer: observation, visualisation and embodiment of ideas, to demonstrate how design knowledge and thinking can be applied to areas outside the traditional domain of design;
- To allow students to locate or reposition their existing design practice in a new socio-economic context.
Students initially work on set project briefs to try new methods of working and thinking, before focusing on their individual project proposal. A subject specific advisor from the DJCAD or from Industry is appointed to advise each student in development and realisation of their Masters Project. Throughout the course students attend workshops, lectures and seminars from nationally and internationally renowned speakers from design, art, psychology, computing, business and a range of other disciplines.
The programme draws upon the diverse, unique and internationally acclaimed research conducted in the School of Design and other schools across the University. We are one of the few Art & Design Colleges in the UK that is part of a world class university (according to The Times World University Rankings 2007). Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design itself has been rated as the top institution in Scotland for research in art and design, and one of the best in the whole of the UK (RAE 2008).
The course is led by designer, Hazel White. Contributors to the teaching include:
- Professor Tom Inns (Director of Designing for the 21st Century initiative);
- Professor Mike Press (author of two major books on design);
- Professor Georgina Follett, OBE;
- Fraser Bruce (MPhil), Design Strategy & Innovation;
- Jonathan Baldwin (winner of the 'best higher education title' prize at the 2007 British Book Awards);
- Jeanette Paul (Scientific Panel member for the International Academy for Design and Health World Congress);
- Colin Burns (Designer and former Head of IDEO, London).
Methods of Assessment:
Course work, including team project work, exploratory and finalised practical work, and written work.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testApplicants are normally expected to have a first or an upper second class honours degree in a design discipline. However, individuals from other practical or theoretical disciplines are also welcomed as are candidates with relevant professional or industrial experience. Prospective candidates whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language competency (IELTS 6.0).
The application process:
Applications are made online and consist of five elements: a personal statement, a portfolio, two academic references, educational details, and a short project proposal.
The portfolio:
We would like to see 10 focused slides (online or as a .PDF) which explain what you can do.
These should show your design process:
You might include sketches, early prototypes, pages of research, a picture or bibliography of the books on current issues in design which you have read - we are trying to download your brain. Show us how you think.
You may have a blog or website that already contains all this. Or you might start one for the application, which will double up as an online portfolio for you in the future. Or you can put it all in a Powerpoint and save it as a PDF which gets uploaded with your application (keep the file sizes manageable).
The proposal:
What do you want to do with a year's Masters study? Have you found a burning passion that you haven't had time to fully explore, or are you working on something that you feel could go much further?. We're looking for 300-500 words, which explain what you are interested in, why it is worth developing (for you, or the world in general), what other projects you have seen that are similar and inspiring and, just maybe, where you'd like to be at the end of a 12 month Masters. This is speculative, and will probably change over the year of the Masters.
The selection procedure:
Once we have received a completed application, including all references etc. we make a decision whether to make an offer based on the all the elements of the application. We make conditional offers based on successful completion of your undergraduate degree (normally at 2.1 or above) if you are still studying , or an unconditional offer if you have all the necessary qualifications. We generally make a decision based on the application alone but may invite you to an interview, in person or by Skype.
Closing date for early decisions:
We have an early closing date of 18th March to allow prospective students to explore funding opportunities and secure visas for travel. You may apply after this date, but most students find that the early confirmation of offer useful. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in April.
