This programme is taught by the School of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. This has been rated as the top institution in Scotland for research in art and design, and one of the best in the whole of the UK (RAE 2008).
Aims of the Programme:
- To support students in the development of an ambitious body of work
- To provide an enhanced understanding of contemporary art practice
- To prepare students to contribute to contemporary discourse through writing and debate
- To provide a preparation for students who want to proceed to PhD study
The programme comprises five modules and is responsive to students' individual practices and research interests. An intensive studio experience in a stimulating research environment is combined with individual tutorials, student-led critiques, lectures, seminars and study trips. The programme embraces all forms of contemporary art practice including curating. Students work across a broad range of media such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation, film, photography, moving image and sound.
Methods of Assessment:
Students are assessed on studio work, evidence of inquiry, written work and oral presentation. At the end of the programme a body of work is presented at the Masters Degree Show.
The programme has two exit points: Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testApplicants should have a first or upper second class honours degree in a visual discipline. Those with other qualifications or relevant professional experience will also be considered.

Project Proposal:
300-500 words setting out the context and focus of your area of study. The proposal should state the research question or issue that you wish to address, demonstrating knowledge of work already done in the area by other designers and detailing your relevant skills. Outline what value the project will have for your practice as a designer and what benefits it will bring to others. The proposal will be treated as open and flexible and will evolve as your study progresses.
Portfolio:
An electronic portfolio (PowerPoint or PDF) of 20 images showing previous design work including a short explanation of the project and evidence of process. (Images 72dpi and no larger than 1024x768). For online portfolios, please provide the URL. All work in portfolios must be candidate's own work and a written declaration of this should be included in the 'Additional information' section. Group work may of course be included, indicating your contribution.
English Language Requirement: IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent), if your first language is not English.
