The Degree
The Master´s programme leads to the degree of Master of Philosophy in German. It is a two-year programme. (120 ECTS credits).
Objectives / Contents
The aim of the master's programme in German is to improve your skills and increase your knowledge in German studies in general, and in your area of specialisation (linguistics or literary studies) in particular.
The Master´s programme consists of four courses, each equivalent to 15 ECTS credits, and a Master´s thesis of 60 ECTS credits (70-110 pages). You will be expected to fulfil the programme´s course requirements in the first year and complete the thesis in the second. The graduate programme is designed to focus on selected topics in German language linguistics and literature and to provide an introduction to academic procedures, theories and methods through work on a thesis on either linguistics or literature. Its courses are designed to facilitate the development of language proficiency.
Programme profile
The linguistics component deals with various issues related to the German language. The subjects vary from German grammar in the broad sense to contrastive linguistics, translation theory, semantics/lexicology, sociolinguistics, varieties of German (German in Germany, Austria and Switzerland), phraseology, language learning and language didactics. In several areas, the subjects may also be presented in a historical perspective.
The literature component offers literary and cultural subjects taken from all areas of the German language. The approach may be historical, with the emphasis on literary periods from the Baroque to the present, or it may focus on authorship, text analysis, genres and literary theory. Common to all courses is their discussion and analysis of literary and methodological questions.
Method
The department offers advanced courses within literary and linguistic theory and method, discussing all the major fields involved. The advanced courses will provide you with a solid foundation for the master's thesis.
Thesis
The master's thesis is work of scientific enquiry within language or literature. Its aim is to demonstrate that you have an extensive knowledge of the research in the area, and are able to deal with a question in a scientific manner. You should select a subject for the master's thesis as early as possible in the second semester. You will receive guidance during your work with the thesis, and normally be required to sign a supervision contract at the beginning of the second semester. The master's thesis is to be written in German and should be between 70 and 110 pages.
