Location of Uppsala University

The programme focuses on the usability of Information Technology (IT) systems. It provides all the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully work with all types of usability-related matters for IT systems, from requirements and work analyses to interaction design, evaluation and implementation. It is an education where you will learn about the most recent theoretical advances as well as acquiring practical skills through our focus on project work.

To be able to provide challenging and relevant projects throughout the programme, we cooperate with leading IT companies and organizations that help formulate all our projects. You will also learn how to use our modern and fully equipped usability lab.

As an expert in the usability of IT systems you will have many job opportunities. You are capable of working with all aspects of usability, from analysis and requirements, gathering to the design and implementation of user interfaces and to perform usability evaluations of several kinds. Furthermore, you can do this from a user and usage perspective with regards to effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction among the users, safety issues and the creation of well functioning work environments. The programme is also designed so that you can quickly master new research findings within the area and understand their practical relevance.


Contents

The programme is a cooperation between two departments, the Department of Informatics and Media and the Department of Information Technology. Our lecturers all have experience from both research and practical usability work. As a result of this, we base our teaching on project work, where our industrial partners provide us with genuine and relevant projects.

Our students gain a portfolio of a wide variety of completed projects which can be presented when applying for a position.

The expected qualities a student will demonstrate upon successfully completing the programme are:

  • Knowledge about the scientific base in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), its accepted practices and insight into the current research trends.
  • A deep understanding of usability-related methods for analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation of IT-systems.
  • An ability to take part in and guide development projects in the IT-sector and to perform usability evaluations.
  • An ability to independently plan, and with adequate methods, analyze tasks, ser studies and information obtained.
  • An ability to independently plan, and with adequate methods, design a ell-functioning interaction between users and systems in accordance with societal and organizational demands.
  • An ability to build and evaluate prototypes of user interfaces to IT systems -An ability to independently plan with adequate methods, and execute a minor research project.
  • An ability to evaluate projects and activities based on relevant scientific, societal and ethical considerations.
  • An understanding of the ethical issues involved in scientific research and systems development.
  • An ability to identify your own need of further knowledge and to continuously improve your own competency.
  • Insight into the role of usability in working life.
  • Insight into the possibilities and limitations of IT systems, their societal importance and the responsibility of humans regarding its use.
  • Insight into the importance of teamwork and cooperation with many types of work groups in order to achieve usable IT systems.

The programme consists of the following course modules:

First semester

  • Scientific methods in HCI 7.5 credits
  • User interface design and practices 7.5 credits
  • Usability evaluation methods 7.5 credits
  • Theories and models in HCI 7.5 credits

Second semester

  • User-centered systems design 5 credits
  • Advanced interaction design 5 credits
  • User interface programming I 5 credits
  • User interface programming II 5 credits
  • Humans in complex systems 5 credits
  • IT, ethics and organizations 5 credits

Third semester

  • Electives, the following modules are given:
  • Internet and new media 15 credits
  • Perception and visual design 15 credits
  • Contextual usability 15 credits

Fourth semester

  • Degree project 30 credits

A significant part of the knowledge will be acquired through practical (individual and group) work. Active participation in seminars is expected. Practical field work with actual problems is used as a base to complement the lectures and seminars.

As an expert in the usability of IT systems you will have many job opportunities. You will be capable of working with masterall aspects of usability, from analysis and requirements gathering to the design and implementation of user interfaces and of performing usability evaluations of several kinds.

Furthermore, you will be able to do this from a user and usage perspective with regards to effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction among the users, accessibility, safety issues and the creation of well-functioning work environments.

The programme is also designed so that you can quickly master new research findings in the area and understand their practical relevance.

Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Social Science (120 credits) with Human-Computer Interaction as the main field of study.
After one year of study it may also be possible to get a Master of Social Science (60 credits), with Human-Computer Interaction as the main field of study.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time studies) containing IT-related course modules comprising the equivalent of at least 60 credits in total.

All applicants need to verify English language proficiency. This is normally attested by an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Selection: Selection is based on previous academic studies, a short summary of previous thesis or other relevant work (maximum one page summary), and a statement of intent. Well documented knowledge of object oriented programming techniques is considered an important merit.
