On the MLitt in Scottish Church History students will develop in-depth knowledge of the history of the Scottish churches since the Reformation, including their position in Scottish society, the political implications of faith, and in the later stages the issues surrounding secularisation and the decline of the churches in twentieth-century Scotland. The dissertation will lead to strong research skills, using original sources and deep knowledge of the historiography on the subject. Skills classes will lead to knowledge both theory and method useful in the History discipline.

Graduates will enhance their CV with a postgraduate diploma or masters qualification, which can enhance careers in many professions. It will enable those able and willing to proceed to doctoral study. For others, the degree will offer general interest study, return-to-study experience, and up-date on existing historical or related knowledge. Staff are committed to providing the best experience possible to students who may be returning to study after some time away, and useful advance reading suggestions will be made to those students who inquire of the teaching team.
