Location of University of Southern Denmark, Sonderborg Campus

The University of Southern Denmark offers a two-year international Master´s program in Biological Oceanography in cooperation with the University of Kiel (Germany). Both universities contribute with their respective expertise and strengths in teaching and research within marine science.

The University of Southern Denmark has strong expertise in coastal marine biology and the University of Kiel has expertise and unique facilities for studying oceanography on larger scales and greater depths.

The education is interdisciplinary by combining fundamental natural science disciplines, such as physical-, chemical- and biological oceanography and marine geology, with socio-economic disciplines related to management of the marine environment and utilization of marine resources in the course of studies. The education has close contact to Danish and German oceanographic institutions and administrative authorities.

In particular, a number of research professors from the largest Danish oceanographic institutions participate as teachers during the course of studies and offer supervision and facilities for the final research project. In general, the network of oceanographic institutions supporting Biological Oceanography offers places to do an internship as part of the final year of study and also introduces the students to the field of applied marine science and possible future workplaces and working areas. The result is an education in Biological Oceanography of high international standard.

Contents

The two-year Master´s program in Biological Oceanography offers lectures, seminars, field courses and an internship at an oceanographic institution and covers all aspects of biological oceanography. The program consists of compulsory and optional courses and an independent research project during the final year of study.

The first term consists of courses in fundamental oceanography and marine geology at the Institute für Meereskunde, University of Kiel. T

he second term consists of courses in advanced biological oceanography and fundamentals of resource management and economy at the Institute of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. Also included are one or more optional courses from the Institute of Biology. Both institutes offer field courses, including several shorter and one long cruise with a marine research vessel.

The third and fourth term are reserved for a research project in Biological Oceanography. The research project may be carried out either in Odense or in Kiel. An external supervisor from the network of oceanographic institutions may supervise on the project and in many cases the practical part of the project can be carried out partly or completely at the oceanographic institution. A three months stay at an oceanographic institution or a period of practice within a company, or within an administrative authority can be included as part of the project.

Requirements

Admission requirementsStudents with bachelor's degrees from countries in the European Union or Switzerland

Students with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology or a related subject can apply for admission to the program at the bachelors level. Only students with the prerequisite qualifications can be accepted. Since the courses below graduate level are only given in Danish, students who are not in command of the Danish language will not be able to take supplementary courses to bring them up to the required level for graduate study.

Students with bachelor's degrees from countries outside Switzerland or the European Union

· A first degree with good grades requiring at least three years of study after the level of the Danish school-leaving certificate

· Qualifications in biochemistry and molecular biology equivalent to a first degree in the subject (a degree in a closely related subject such as microbiology may be acceptable if the program has a high content of biochemistry and molecular biology)

· Satisfactory results from the Graduate Record Examination in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology

· A minimum result of 6,5 in the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The only exception to this requirement is for applicants whose first degree was taken in Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the USA.

Potential applicants should note that the program is not appropriate for applicants with qualifications at the technician level who wish to undertake further study at university level, or applicants with qualifications in other biological sciences or medicine who wish to change field and obtain a qualification in molecular biotechnology. The courses in the program are at graduate level and presuppose the knowledge obtained during studies for a first degree in the same area.
