The University of Dundee LLM in International Dispute Resolution is a unique distance learning programme taught by a team of internationally-recognised academics and practitioner-trainers.
The LLM and its associate programmes, the Diploma in International Dispute Resolution and the Certificate in International Dispute Resolution, have been awarded Recognised Course Provider status from two professional bodies – the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and Mediation Scotland LLP. This external approval provides significant advantages to those who successfully complete the relevant modules in International Commercial Arbitration, Negotiation and Mediation.
The programme will appeal to LLB qualified professionals who seek to up-skill, as well as practitioners who want to diversify. It will also appeal to graduates with an LLB or equivalent degree, who wish to gain a detailed understanding of International and European (primarily Commercial) policies and rules of importance to the settlement of disputes in international business, legal or governmental settings.

Our commitment is to provide high quality instruction, with a focus on matters of practical relevance, to prepare our graduates for a successful legal career, whether at home or abroad.

The International Dispute Resolution programmes are available via two pathways:
- a fully distance learning pathway.
or
- a combination of distance learning modules complemented by a compulsory residential element focussed on practical Negotiation and Mediation skills.
Course Structure:
Post Graduate Certificate
To graduate with the Certificate, students must obtain the following credits:
- Introduction to International Dispute Resolution [20 credits]
- Mediation [15 credits]
- Negotiation [15 credits]
- International Commercial Arbitration [20 credits]
Post Graduate Diploma
To graduate with the Diploma, students must complete the Certificate, and also obtain the following credits:
- Research Skills [15 credits]
- Diploma Essay [35 credits]
The essay topics are selected by the student on the basis of a moderation process with an approved supervisor and will be in a subject area directly related to the topics available in the programme. This offers students an opportunity to conduct advanced research in a subject of their choosing.
LLM
Award of the full LLM will require success in all the Diploma elements as well as the completion of the following:
Two of the following optional modules [each 10 credits]:
- Advanced Arbitration
- International Litigation - Procedure
- International Litigation - Jurisdiction, Recognition and Enforcement
- International Litigation - Involvement of States or International Institutions
Plus an LLM Dissertation [40 credits].
Methods of Assessment:
The modules in this programme are taught through a distance learning environment using the University’s highly-developed virtual learning environment, Blackboard, (My Dundee), on the basis of directed reading and advance preparation by students. Student progress is supported and monitored through a series of formative exercises coupled with feedback. Each module is assessed summatively by coursework.
Residential Period:
The programme is primarily taught through a series of distance learning virtual modules. However, if you choose Pathway 2, these are supplemented by an eight-day residential period to be held in Dundee. This intensive period focusses on practical Negotiation and Mediation skills.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

You should have an LLB degree or equivalent.
English Language Requirement: IELTS of 6.5, with minimum of 6.0 in the writing component (or equivalent), if your first language is not English.
In order to make the application process as efficient as possible, students applying to the School of Law are asked to ensure all relevant supporting documents are included with the application. These include:
- Relevant degree certificates and transcripts of academic results.
and
- Two academic references.
