The MSc in Architecture: Advanced Practice, Management & Law is a distance learning programme combining independent study and a research dissertation. It is designed to be flexible, students can study while they work in a professional office on a part time basis over 18 months. The course is suitable for qualified architects – with RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Parts 1 & 2 or equivalent.
Aims of the Programme:
The aim of the programme is to enable students to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in the professional, contractural and management procedures which are required to achieve innovative and appropriate architecture and a thorough understanding of the role of the professional architect in the total building process. This Masters programme offers advanced professional training to enhance and develop management skills for those who wish to advance their career prospects. It is also aimed at qualified architects who are returning to practice after a career break, maternity leave, etc.
The course structure is based on the latest RIBA Core Curriculum for CPD for the Profession, which takes its structure from the joint ARB / RIBA Criteria for the Examination in Professional Practice and Management (Part 3) in the UK.
The range of modules on offer allows students to use them for required RIBA / RIAS accredited CPD.
The core modules are:
- Research Methodologies and Communications
- Law and Contract
- Health and Safety in the Construction Industry
- Practice Management
- Elective Module
Students can currently choose one elective module from:
- Integrated Sustainability
- Construction Project Management
Finally, students complete a dissertation.
Methods of Study:
The emphasis of the course is on interactive learning and will include assignments, web based e/gaming and feedback sessions on course-work.
The course is delivered using distance learning methods, via Blackboard, a web based virtual learning environment. Activities carried out in the office are monitored by the School of Architecture. Assignment papers are set and marked throughout the course. Students will be given the opportunity to explore topics of interest to them and their office in the form of essays, case studies and a dissertation.

An honours degree at 2.1 or above in architecture, building services, planning,
engineering, science or related disciplines or an ability to demonstrate considerable
experience in a relevant field.
English Language Requirements IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent) for applicants whose first language is not English.
