Spatial Planning determines the design of places, the relationships between land uses, and identifies infrastructure requirements. The planning process makes provision for the needs of households and the requirements of the economy, and planning aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of development upon our natural environment.
The planning system is currently undergoing change to be better able to address the challenges of competitiveness and sustainability. There is a pressing requirement in both the public and private sectors for planners with appropriate understanding and skills to plan for development and protect the environment.
The University is a long-established provider of planning education. MSc Spatial Planning will be attractive to individuals with a real interest in tackling the challenges of important urban planning issues; MSc Spatial Planning with Environmental Assessment is designed to equip graduates for the professional management of strategic environmental assessment obligations in the development process.
Aims of the Programme:
MSc Spatial Planning is a multi-disciplinary programme of post-graduate study providing the preparation for entry into professional careers in town and regional planning and urban development.
Whereas planners share a common understanding of the principles and legal system of spatial planning, there is an increasing call for planners with specialist expertise in critical aspects of practice.
The programme has been designed to enable students to specialise in one of five areas: environmental assessment, community engagement, marine spatial planning, sustainable urban design, and transport planning.
Students make an individual choice between these specialist routes when completing the first semester of study.
Contents
The programme is undertaken, on a full-time basis, over 12 months, or, on a part-time basis, normally over two years. It is organised on a modular basis and comprises eight core modules and a specialist module. Masters students pursue a research project on the specialist subject area.

The specialist element is enhanced by the completion of a research project for Masters students.
Methods of Assessment:
Assessment methods cover a mix of formats including case study evaluations, group project-work, and a research project. There are no written examinations. The aims are to assess the development of subject understanding and research skills, of intellectual and problem-solving competences, and also, the possession of communication and inter-personal competences as required by a practicing professional planner.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Applicants will normally have at least a lower-second class of honours degree, or equivalent, in a suitable discipline. Applications from individuals, without an honours degree, but with substantial work experience relevant to spatial planning, will be considered.

Accreditation
Professional Accreditation: The MSc is approved by the Royal Town Planning Institute as satisfying the first year requirements of the Assessment of Professional Competence route to gaining full chartered membership.
