Spatial Planning determines the design of places, the relationships between land uses, and identifies infrastructure requirements. The planning process makes provision for the needs of households and the requirements of the economy, and planning aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of development upon our natural environment.

Marine Spatial Planning is a new field arising from new legislation geared to sustainable use of the marine environment. New planning procedures are being introduced and new skills are required to engage with the process. It is aimed at environmental planners and consultants working with local authorities, regulatory bodies, government, land owners and NGOs.

Aims of the Programme:

MSc Spatial Planning is a multi-disciplinary programme of post-graduate study providing the preparation for entry into professional careers in town and regional planning and urban development.

Whereas planners share a common understanding of the principles and legal system of spatial planning, there is an increasing call for planners with specialist expertise in critical aspects of practice.

The programme has been designed to enable students to specialise in one of five areas: environmental assessment, community engagement, marine spatial planning, sustainable urban design, and transport planning.

Students make an individual choice between these specialist routes when completing the first semester of study.

Career Opportunities:

The programme will provide an inter-disciplinary training of general value, but Marine Spatial Planning is a rapidly developing field directed towards improving the sustainable use of our marine environment, resonating with the fast-growing coastal, offshore and seabed industries in UK, Europe and Worldwide. New start-up companies and large-scale government investment are also opening up employment prospects in emerging economies such as Singapore, China and India. Students graduating from this programme will be very well placed to take advantage of these global opportunities.

Contents

The programme is undertaken, on a full-time basis, over 12 months, or, on a part-time basis, normally over two years. It is organised on a modular basis and comprises eight core modules and a specialist module. Masters students pursue a research project on the specialist subject area.

The core programme covers:

- Sustainable Environments

- Urban Economics

- Planning Theory

- Place Design

- Statutory Planning

- Statutory Systems

- Development Project Management

- Planning Knowledge Management

You choose one from the specialist modules:

- Environmental Assessment

- Community Engagement

- Martine Spatial Planning

- Sustainable Urban Design

- Transport Planning

The specialist element is enhanced by the completion of a research project for Masters students.

Methods of Assessment:

Assessment methods cover a mix of formats including case study evaluations, group project-work, and a research project. There are no written examinations. The aims are to assess the development of subject understanding and research skills, of intellectual and problem-solving competences, and also, the possession of communication and inter-personal competences as required by a practicing professional planner.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
