Whether you will be going for a job in utility planning, government administration, energy consultancy, academic research, international institution, or in an NGO, we will prepare you to face the challenges in planning and managing energy sector developments, technology options, plans and policies.
We offer you a toolbox to model and analyse energy systems from a technical, economic and institutional perspective that will professionalise your methods and skills. Moreover, we will provide you with a problem-based and innovative working environment that will empower you to plan and implement sustainable solutions in the energy sector. Our researchers are regularly involved in the public debate over strategies related to market liberalisation, energy and environmental policies, energy conservation, and the utilisation of renewable energy resources. In fact, our professors are widely recognized among energy sector stakeholders for pioneering the move to promote sustainable energy in Denmark.
The integration of techno-economic energy system analyses, policy analyses and institutional analyses is our main area of expertise. We have created an innovative environment for the development of various techno-economic methods, including various software tools. We are also pioneering a methodology for analysing foreign exchange impacts and employment impacts of energy sector investments. Finally, our experience and thinking in ways of doing feasibility studies is significant.
We believe Aalborg University is the obvious place to study Sustainable Energy Planning and Management.
Visits and collaboration with companies
Collaboration with and visits to companies and institutions is an integrated part of the problem-oriented group-based project work. We typically visit a wind farm, a biogas plant, a CHP plant, and have some guest lectures from people in the energy industry. In your projects, you are very welcome to collaborate with companies and on the 3rd semester you will typically do a traineeship in a relevant company or organisation.
Study Options
You may enrol either as a Master Student or as a Guest/Exchange Student. As a Master Student, you enrol to complete the full two-year Master's programme in Sustainable Energy and Management (4 semesters). As a Guest Student, you enrol to complete the 1st and/or 2nd semester.
Semester plan
On the 1st semester you will focus on specific energy projects from a technical and economic perspective. This could for instance be the design of a 100 % renewable energy plan for an area, the potential for district heating in New York City or how to integrate wind power into the energy system by the use of electric vehicles. You will be introduced to theories, methods and tools for evaluating energy projects.
You will spend two thirds of your time working in your own group office on a project chosen by the group. One third of your time will be spent taking courses.
Courses on the 1st semester presently include:
Courses are subject to changes.
On the 2nd semester, the focus is on is the macro level. Energy systems are seen in the context of macro-economics, energi policy, institutions and the society.
You will spend two thirds of your time working in your own group office on a project chosen by the group. One third of your time will be spent taking courses.
Courses on the 2nd semester include:
Courses are subject to changes.
On the 3rd semester, you will get the chance to apply what you have learned during previous semesters in a real setting during a three-months' traineeships in a company or organisation somewhere in the world.
You will typically be given one large task to work on as a trainee - a task that will manifest itself in a report which will also be submitted to the university for evaluation. Alternatively, the student may work on various tasks for the host organisation and in parallel to this prepare a report targeted solely at the university for evaluation.
You may also stay at the university and make a project there, however there is not coursework on this semester. Alternatively - a semester as a guest student at another university may appeal to you.
On the 4th semester you will write yourmaster's thesis. The thesis will resemble the projects you have worked on during the previous semesters though the level of sophistication should of course reflect your understanding of the energy planning field. A master's thesis must discuss the chosen subject both on a general, theoretically informed level, and on a more empirical and practical level, incorporating e.g. a feasibility study, a plan for implementation or an evaluation of a specific project.
For all four semesters, the programme offers an unsually large degree of freedom in terms of determing what kind of energy planner you wish to become. Do you fancy numerical analyses of energy systems? Are you more into policies for promoting renewable energy? Do you see wind power as the answer to all questions? Or bio-fuels? You have a large fredom do tailor-make your study through the choice of projects. The only limitation is on the first two semesters where you will be working with 3-5 other students on a project that you are all interested in.
