The department of American Studies at the Faculty of Humanities offers an international master degree in American Studies.

What does it mean to be American? Is there a shared American culture? It is questions such as these that American Studies concerns itself with.Due to the global influence of the USA, most Danes feel that they `know´ the US. The USA is often perceived as one single culture, disregarding the pluralism that characterizes the nation.

Previously it was widely held that public and private institutions had no need for a deeper and more scientifically based knowledge of the US. This attitude, however, is rapidly disappearing and researchers at the Centre for American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark are experiencing a growing demand for the knowledge the centre possesses.

The education will qualify the student for job functions such as:

* Public relations
* Positions with a need for professional knowledge of the USA
* Consultants to decision-makers
* Employees at companies established in the American market, or considering entering that market.

Contents

The elective in American Studies is an interdisciplinary study, i.e. a combination of American history and in American literature. Its objective is to understand and to analyze American culture, including politics, identity, and symbolic.
