Location of University of Dundee

This programme (accredited by the GTC for Scotland) prepares graduates to teach effectively in primary and nursery schools.

During the Programme, a student will experience all of the stages in primary schools, including nursery education. He/she may also find himself/herself in different types of school - closed classroom, open plan, inner city, rural and variations on all of these. It is essential that students recognise the need for a variety of placement locations.

The programme is school-focused. Experience is given at all stages in the Primary from the Nursery to the Upper Primary so that every student completes the Programme qualified to teach pupils from the age of three to twelve years.

The Programme offers a choice of electives to enable students to study in more depth an aspect of primary education which will meet current needs in the professional sector and enhance their professional profiles. The following electives are currently offered: Science; Modern Languages; Information Communications Technology and Learning; Music and Drama. This varies from year to year, to meet perceived needs.)


Contents

Modules:

Curricular Studies - 5-14 curriculum of Environmental Studies, Expressive Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics, Health, Personal and Social Development, and Religious and Moral Education.

Professional Studies - one elective module in an area of their choice from a selection of subjects.

School Placement - 18 weeks working with 3-12 year olds in a variety of settings.

Methods of Assessment:

Formative assessment and summative assessment throughout the programme. School Placement is assessed with reference to the Standard for Initial Teacher Education by university staff and school partners. Although this programme is at graduate entry it is delivered at SCQF Level 10.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

You need to have all of the following:

1. A UK degree, or an equivalent standard from outside the United Kingdom

2. SCE Higher grade English at Grade C OR GSCE English Language plus GCSE English Literature at Grade C OR Communication 4 plus Literature 1 Modules (or an acceptable equivalent*)

3. Standard Grade Mathematics Credit Level Grade 1 or 2 OR GCSE Mathematics Grade A or B (or an acceptable equivalent*). We do accept Intermediate 2 Mathematics at Grade C or above as an equivalent to Standard Grade Mathematics at Levels 1 or 2. This qualification can be done at a local Further Education College and consists of 3 modules and an Exam in May. Please note we do not accept Core 4 Mathematics at Intermediate 2 Level.

4. Some recent experience of a primary classroom is normally required and certainly desirable

*Irish Leaving Certificate equivalencies are C2 Higher level English and A2 Ordinary level Mathematics or above.

Overseas students should make contact with the Programme Administrator to discuss their Degree, English and Maths qualifications.

Applicants will be interviewed prior to final acceptance, and are required to have a satisfactory Disclosure check before commencing the programme.
