Europe is facing a rapid development these days. Over the past twenty years the map of Europe has changed. The main division constituted by the Cold War has disappeared. Although new conflicts have arisen and the formation of new nation-states has drawn new borders, today Europe is characterised by a comprehensive co-operation across the borders. It takes place at many levels, from national to regional and local, including cross-border regional co-operation.

The European Studies programme focuses mainly on regional development. Local and regional public authorities and organizations consider it a priority to improve cultural, educational, and business conditions in their areas as it can secure constant growth and development of life conditions for the populations of their regions. Thereby a need arises for competent employees to actively participate in the preparation, support, and completion of region development actions.

The Master study programme is designed to provide both theoretical and pragmatic
knowledge. Its focus will be to give insight into European affairs with emphasis on the problems of regions and the importance of regions in Europe.

The programme is international and appeals to students from all over Europe and abroad. All classes will be taught in English and all study material will be in English.
The Master programme comprises both compulsory and elective subjects. The compulsory courses are built around the following three main dimensions of the programme: Europe, Regions, and Development.

The Master programme emphasises a comprehensive and in-depth insight into relevant European issues within the disciplines of social sciences and the humanities, such as economics and political theories, European law, European ideas, and European contemporary history. Further, the programme addresses regional development and innovation. Graduates in European Studies is expected to find a career in private enterprises, public administration, and international organizations that work within the field of regional development, cross-border cooperation or European and transnational integration.

The programme in European Studies has been created in a co-operation between the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Flensburg. It has been established as an Interreg IIIA programme funded by the European Union. The two-year Master programme takes place mainly at the University of Flensburg.
